Subject: Heal the World - 2021 Limited badgelet

Posted by: WesleyCrusher
Date: Jan 20 21

With 2020 now being history, we are looking forward to a hopefully brighter 2021. With the pandemic still raging, it didn't start out on the most auspicious note, but we are sure it will get better and everyone can do their part to make that come true, one small contribution at a time.

Along this vein, we have decided to build on the Gateway and have a limited edition themed authoring challenge every year. 2021's motto will be Heal the World - and you can take that any way you want.

Basically, what we want is some wide-ranging positivity - things that have made the world a better place or improved life for a large group.

Here are a few suggestions to get your creative juices flowing:

- You could take the "heal" part literally and focus on progress in medicine or wildlife conservation. You could also increase the scale and focus on a successful recovery effort after a disaster or war.

- Pop culture has ample takes on the topic in all media types. From uplifting songs to utopian movies and novels, there should be something for everyone.

- Individuals and initiatives who have strived or are still striving to improve equality, eliminate poverty, raise quality of life and preserve our planet are prime candidates for some extra coverage.

- History often reads like a list of doom, gloom and warfare, why not go against the trend and focus on a peace treaty or other positive resolution of a conflict?

- Most religions contain messages of salvation reaching beyond the individual believer. Enlighten the world by bringing them to our attention.

- Last but not least, you could also look at how everyone can contribute to a better world in daily life. Wouldn't this be a great opportunity to maybe get a quiz credit in the For Children category?

This is a very open-ended challenge and you can make a lot of topics fit. Remember, however, that your quiz should project the message - so the more unconventional your take, the more you'll have to do in your presentation to ensure you're getting that positive vibe right.

As a special community challenge by yours truly - can we (as a group) manage to get at least one quiz for each of the 20 categories into the mix? A few might be slightly tougher (Geography, Sports and Celebrities for example might not be immediate candidates), but I don't see them as impossible.

As a note for those who've taken part in the Gateway, there will be one change this year: We won't give the keys just to those who join the club. We want to, after all, give something to the world at large, so you can expect all approved entries to prominently feature in a quiz list or challenge once the year is over.

This challenge will remain open until the last second of 2021, FunTrivia time - having your quiz submitted by then is good enough. Badge awarding is manual and you need to post in this thread to claim credit. Spread the word!

*Last checked and awarded up to post 195 - 63 winners so far*

Wes, I think I have a great quiz idea that should fit nicely in the celebrities category. So maybe that will be one "tough" category knocked out. :) I would think "video games" would be the most difficult for this type of challenge...or pretty much any challenge! Lol

Thanks for the inspiration!

I believe there are several video games that deal with saving the world or disaster recovery and there would also be options with games that allow multiple strategies - anyone want to write a quiz on how to win in the Civilization series without ever attacking anyone?

I had a couple of ideas for Geography as well, though they will need time and a bit more inspiration to be developed. Thankfully we have plenty of time at our disposal :-)!

After WWII health focused on attending the sick and the injured to lead them back to the healthiest the individual could be. Hospitals became bigger and monuments to a better health system. The economic burden of such approach is huge. In the 21st Century there has been a emphasis to keep the population healthy as opposed to treating the sick individual. This is Public Health. It is not new but the need for vaccination to ameliorate COVID-19 has only underlined the need for public health measures for the greater good of community health. I will write a quiz on the public health achievements of the first two decades of the 21st Century.

I'm currently toying with a quiz about the role of one of the least-rewarded but most necessary members of any RPG. Might keep it tucked into VG but we shall see.

Could we do mythical heroes/gods or does it have to be real life? I'm thinking of doing a Humanities quiz.

Wes, how about a Books for Kids quiz on "Doctor Dolittle"? -

Kankurette, if literary and movie characters work, so do those of ancient myth.

Dr. Dolittle is most certainly appropriate.

As to the submissions, spanishliz' is certainly well on target. Reedy I would call twice bounced on the net and then the linesman wasn't sure it was in or out.. for some of those inventions, people might argue they haven't improved the world.

I'll count it, but you'll probably write a second one anyway :)

That's good to know - I was thinking of the story of Pandora's box, the gift of fire, various gifts from gods and so on. Greek myth is pretty depressing but there is some more upbeat stuff in there.

Sorry for double post, but after reading the OP (and your comment about going over the line made me think about the joys of VAR!), I've got another question: sports. Would a quiz about positive things footballers have done (e.g. Marcus Rashford's campaign for free school meals during lockdown) count as Sports? I know it's about stuff that happens OFF the pitch but I don't think it'll go in Celebrities. It was either going to be that or something about underdog teams.
