Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Keep A Child Alive is an organisation that supports HIV/AIDS-affected communities in Africa and India. It was founded in 2003 by Leigh Blake and which multi Grammy winning artist?

Answer: Alicia Keys

When Keys was a child, her mother's friend died from HIV/AIDS and this event had a profound effect on her. Much later, after befriending AIDS activist, Leigh Blake, the pair went on a trip to South Africa, where Keys was amazed at the lack of education available to people living in communities affected by the disease.
This trip, combined with the memory of her mother's friend inspired Keys and Blake to found the Keep A Child Alive organisation, which aside from providing education, also supplies resources such as medicine, orphan care, and social support to affected communities.
The organisation's annual Black Ball fundraising gala has seen performances from Usher, Boy George, Adele, David Bowie and Paul Simon among many others and in its first decade of being held raised over $25 million.
2. Which multi platinum Hawaiian musician started the Ohana Charitable Foundation in 2008, an organisation which supports the "green movement" as well as furthering music education?

Answer: Jack Johnson

Johnson and his wife Kim have been truly remarkable in their support for environmental causes.
On his 2008 and 2010 world tours, crew were not allowed to drink bottled water, instead tap water from a filtration system was supplied resulting in a saving of over 55,000 plastic bottles.
For the fans, water stations were installed at each concert allowing them to refill bottles and all merchandise sold was made from eco-friendly sustainable and reusable materials.
In order to cut down on carbon dioxide emissions, almost 30,000 gallons of sustainable biodiesel was used to power tour buses, equipment trucks and on site generators, while fans were encouraged through a Jack Johnson app to car share, saving over 200,000 pounds of CO2.
Johnson also donated all of the profits from both tours to the charity, allowing them to collaborate with over 500 community groups worldwide focusing on plastic free initiatives and sustainable local food systems.
3. "Rebuilding pride in one's self and one's community - one SOUL at a time", is part of the mission statement for the Soul Foundation, founded in 2006 by which son of New Jersey?

Answer: Jon Bon Jovi

The JBJ Soul Foundation grew from Project HOME which had been founded in 1989 by Sister Mary Scullion. The aim of the foundation is to "combat issues that force families and individuals into economic despair and to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness."
With Bon Jovi actively at the helm, the foundation operates in 11 states and Washington D.C. and has been involved in a number of projects.
In Philadelphia, they opened the JBJ Soul Homes in 2014, a complex that, in addition to retail and office space, also includes 55 apartments for formerly homeless and low income people, while in the same year, also in Philadelphia and in association with Northern Children's Services, they opened Merrick Hall, a permanent housing facility for homeless teenage mothers and their children.
In New Jersey, the foundation has opened Joseph House, a facility for homeless people as well as 180 Turning Lives Around, a safe house for victims of domestic abuse.
In addition to these facilities, the foundation also operates JBJ Soul Kitchen in New Jersey, providing meals in a relaxed atmosphere to in need patrons as well as The B.E.A.T. Center (Bringing Everyone All Together) in the same state, which offers after school programs in areas such as culinary skills.
4. In 2004, Emmylou Harris founded Bonaparte's Retreat, a charity which helps which section of society?

Answer: Dogs

Harris was moved to start the charity after her own dog, Bonaparte, died, after being her constant companion while at home and touring for ten years. When she decided to adopt a new dog, she was astounded at the number of dogs that were considered unadoptable, and were simply waiting to be put down.
She resolved to take in as many of these dogs as possible, and socialise them to the point where they could be adopted, and has been very successful with hundreds of dogs being placed in their forever homes.
As part of the fundraising efforts for Bonaparte's Retreat, Harris hosts and performs at benefit concerts called Woofstock.
5. Since 1993, which megastar has hosted an Academy Awards party which has raised over US$200 million for his AIDS Foundation?

Answer: Sir Elton John

Elton has admitted he took many risks with unprotected sex during the 1980s and while he feels himself to have been lucky in not contracting HIV, he has lost several friends to the disease. This prompted him to become involved in raising awareness of the disease, and in 1992, he founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
The organisation not only provides education but also supports prevention programmes, and provides care and support services and is a worldwide organisation.
In addition to his Academy Awards party, John also hosts a White Tie & Tiara Ball at his house, where guests have included Sarah, Duchess of York, George Michael, Stephen Fry and Sir Tom Jones. An extravagant auction takes place with lots including Rolls Royce cars and original Tracey Emin art, which raises huge amounts of money for his charity.
6. In 2006, Rihanna founded a charity dedicated to helping terminally ill and disadvantaged children. Sharing its name with a Cher hit, what is this organisation called?

Answer: Believe

Rihanna was just 18 years old when she founded the Believe foundation, which worked to provide emotional, educational, financial and medical support to terminally ill children. She performed a series of free Girls Night Out concerts to raise funds to purchase medical and school supplies for the charity.
In 2012, Rihanna launched the Clara Lionel Foundation which is committed to providing education and emergency response programmes all around the world, but especially in Rihanna's homeland of Barbados.
She hosts the annual Diamond Ball which in its inaugural year of 2014 raised over $2 million, an amount that was bettered the following year when $3 million was raised.
7. In 1987, Belgian film maker Jean-Pierre Dutilleux, English actress Trudie Styler, and her husband the rock star Sting founded a charitable foundation to draw attention to the plight of what?

Answer: Rainforests and their Indigenous Peoples

The Rainforest Foundation Fund was founded after the leader of the Kayapo people of Brazil, Chief Raoni Metuktire, made a personal plea to the three founders. The fund works with indigenous peoples, helping them to ensure that their way of life, and by extension the rainforest, is not disturbed by activities such as illegal logging or mining. In the majority of cases, the foundation will make available 80% of funds required, meaning that the remainder has to be raised by the people affected, reducing the possibility of over funding from a single source.
The foundation works in Africa, in countries such as Cameroon and Central African Republic, in the Americas, assisting in Brazil, Panama and Peru among others as well as in Asia, working in Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.
Sting hosts an annual benefit concert for the foundation, where acts have included Billy Joel and Elton John. In recognition of his efforts, a species of Colombian tree frog was named Dendropsophus stingi in his honour.
8. Willie Nelson along with Neil Young was one of the founders of Farm Aid, a charity set up to help family farms in North America. Which other musician was the third founding member of this organisation?

Answer: John Mellencamp

Farm Aid came about after Nelson heard Bob Dylan remark at the Live Aid concert of 1985, that he hoped that some of the money raised would help American farmers in danger of losing their farms through mortgage debt.
Nelson, Young and Mellencamp set about forming Farm Aid the same year and began planning the first annual concert, featuring Dylan, Billy Joel and Roy Orbison, with all proceeds going to the charity.
Farm Aid was instrumental in bringing about the Agricultural Credit Act of 1987 to help save family farms from foreclosure and also operates a disaster fund available to farmers who suffer hardship caused by natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The fund is not just for financial help, but will also assist with legal expenses, food costs and psychological assistance.
Between 1985 and 2018, Farm Aid had raised almost $50 million.
9. Lady Gaga started a foundation supporting the wellness of young people in 2012. What is this organisation called? If you can finish her lyrics, you've got the answer. "I'm beautiful in my way 'Cause God makes no mistakes I'm on the right track, baby I was__"

Answer: Born This Way

Gaga has drawn on her own experiences as a victim of childhood bullying, to create this foundation which focuses heavily on mental health wellness and trying to make the world a kinder place.
She has teamed up with people such as Oprah Winfrey, the Dalai Lama and Deepak Chopra to highlight the need for mental health resources for young people, and has also worked closely with Staples, Office Depot and coffee chain Starbucks, who in 2017 launched their "Cups Of Kindness", with a percentage of each drink sold going to the Born This Way foundation.
10. A quiz such as this would not be complete without mentioning Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, who formed the Band Aid Charitable Trust to provide relief from hunger, poverty and sickness for the people of Africa. In which year did the star studded concerts known as Live Aid take place?

Answer: 1985

Geldof, lead singer with the Boomtown Rats and Ure, lead singer for Ultravox teamed up in 1984 after seeing the devastation inflicted on Ethiopia by famine.
They persuaded 40 of the biggest British and Irish artists of the 80s to record the track, "Do They Know It's Christmas?", which on its release went straight to the top of UK charts, selling so many copies that it outsold all other records on the top 40 combined.
The track raised over £8 million in the 12 months following its release, which was far beyond Geldof and Ure's initial hopes of £70,000.
"Do They Know It's Christmas?" inspired a similar response to the famine in USA, where artists gathered to record "We Are the World" (1985) and also in 1985, the biggest global concert ever took place with performances in UK, USA, Australia, Yugoslavia, Austria, Soviet Union and West Germany.
The Live Aid concerts raised in excess of £93 million ($127 million).
