Let's see if this works. Fussy chat board bug right now, so this should work in the meantime. :) Reply #1. Jul 05 21, 7:24 PM |

Seems like the hardest part is working out the titles and instructions to the editor Reply #2. Jul 06 21, 12:28 AM |

The beauty of this crossword is that for the crossword solver, they are not going to know what the key word is until they do all three CWs and they might have to wait awhile as its going to take some for them to write them. That is going to cause some tension. I wonder if that was a deliberate design feature created by the person with the devious mind who thought up this challenge? Of course such a devious mind may throw in a few red herrings in the shape a few of the same words in the second CW that already appeared in their first CW (as long as the clues are different). This means the solver has no choice to wait for the third crossword to have any hope of finding the 'connecting' word. (chuckle). Reply #3. Jul 06 21, 3:17 AM |

Oh. I thought you meant the connecting word (three different meanings ie) has to be in the title - which I've just submitted the first one for ?? Reply #4. Jul 06 21, 4:36 AM |

Hmm, I've read it again and - blow it, I've just wasted a perfectly good crossword. None of the words within the submitted one have six letters. I'd kick the cat except it belongs to my neighbour. (Maybe I'll kick it anyway) Reply #5. Jul 06 21, 4:51 AM |

There appears to be a dearth of editors. I know that the crossword team works incredibly hard, and I'm not knocking them, but I have about seven crosswords waiting to be submitted, following one already submitted, and see only six new crosswords have gone online in the past three days. If any of the editing team allows real life to get in the way of the really important stuff like editing my crossword ?? we end up with a bottleneck. Could it be that crossword writing has become so popular that FT needs to recruit more editors to help clear the backlog? Reply #8. Jul 06 21, 7:33 AM |

Whilst I am reasonably clear on the criteria for compiling these crosswords, I'm a little confused by the comment from 1nn1 saying: "for the crossword solver, they are not going to know what the key word is until they do all three CWs" Firstly how will those solving the crosswords expect there to be common words included, and why should they be interested in this aspect? Please just be patient. Two of us have been away and the other (me) has had her eyes dilated :) We'll get to them all, believe me. Reply #10. Jul 06 21, 7:46 AM |

I really am extremely grateful to the whole editing team for your work, Liz, but you have just highlighted the problem. A bottleneck when any of the team is out of action. I really do hope your eyes are not giving you long-term problems. (PS I will be seeing the opthalmologist in a couple of days). Reply #11. Jul 06 21, 8:29 AM |

It doesn't happen often enough that we are all out at once to warrant training a new editor, really. I'm slated to have a cataract removed in September, which I reckon can only help :) Reply #12. Jul 06 21, 8:40 AM |

Queue bottleneck delays happen, sometimes due to circumstances beyond our control. We regret the delays (always, because we know what that wait is like), but we always get to the submissions. :) Reply #13. Jul 06 21, 10:01 AM |

No problemmo. Apparently the editors flagged it half a year ago and it slipped through the cracks. I had Terry's ear for a few minutes today. ;) Reply #16. Jul 06 21, 3:50 PM |

Now, can you get his ear about the problem of new posts not bringing us back the the place in the thread where the post is (which I have reported in a couple of different places), pretty please? (I'm about to be whisked off to an almost blank page, assuring me this has been posted...) Reply #18. Jul 06 21, 4:10 PM |

That one is already in front of him. One thing I should note is that Terry is currently doing *a lot* of tinkering under the hood on the site-- a lot of code clean-up that comes from 21 years of building like a gardener instead of an architect (don't a lot of us around here?). What this means is that site speed and usability should improve in the long-term, but in the short term it means that some bugs that seem like basic necessities might go on the fritz. Best place for them is still the Feedback Forums. They are seen and prioritized. So this being said, there are clean-ups being made to chat board functions, so if it's not fixed quickly, it's because that's ongoing, and it helps to deal with it all in one swoop instead of fixing it, breaking it, fixing it, breaking it. ;) But I promise I let him know.
