Subject: S/M/L Crossword Challenge - COMPLETE

Posted by: kyleisalive
Date: Jul 05 21

As one crossword challenge is completed, another one magically appears.

In this challenge in July 2021, you are required to create three interconnected symmetrical crosswords: One small, one medium, one large. They are connected in two ways. The first is by title. The title of each one should indicate they are part of a series. (That's the easy bit). The second is to have at least one word of six letters or more that is the same word in each crossword but each time is has a different clue.
For instance, let's say that the 'connecting' word is GERMANY. The three clues are: Berlin is the capital; France's neighbour; and, Invaded Poland, 1939.
An example of connected titles include: A Small Crossword on Europe; A Medium Crossword on Europe; and, A Large Crossword on Europe.

There are a few other criteria to consider:
1. Any category you like EXCEPT General (The three crosswords do not need to be in the same category).
2. Minimum 70% white square content, no two letters words, no airport codes as clues, please.
3. Don't forget that symmetry is required.
4. We need to get this challenge finished by the end of July so we can post the next challenge. Please try to get all three written in this time frame.

Specific instructions
1. When submitting your crossword please use the 'Option Note to Editor:' box to indicate:
a. This is one of your challenge crosswords
b. Include the common word, its location and the clue.
c. If this is your second or third crossword carry the same details over from the previous crossword so on the third crossword, all three clues will appear in this box.
2. When your crossword goes online, come back to this thread and post the details so we can link the three together and hyperlink them in the header.

OK, that's enough - Get cracking! Good luck.

I'm wanting to get to this sometime soon. Two days of babysitting after getting my covid jab and my brain's on the fritz. Hopefully tomorrow's trip to the vet isn't bad news.

All the best, Leith.

Kyle, I can't find an appropriate place to ask this question. Is it possible to get the powers that be to allow crosswords to qualify for the rainbow mini-badges? We were excluded from the kitchen ingredients till we asked, why exclude CW builders from the Rainbows?

(Signed) Excluded, from Nairne.

I wondered why I kept ending up on a blank page, but am pleased to know it's a hiccup that will be fixed in due course, and not me wondering if I wrecked anything.

(Notice I kept quiet about it until SL mentioned it)

Hey Windrush-- the appropriate place for that question would be the Feedback Forum. Wes and Terry often go on binges of badge releases and the first place they check is in the relevant threads there.

Generally we don't tend to mix and match quizzes and crosswords for rewards because both require very different skillsets.

I wouldn't mind seeing something similar for Crosswords, though.

(Mainly posting to test something ;) )

Seeing Kyle's comment above re utilising the Feedback Forum, I'd like to draw everyone's attention to a minor change in relation to the display of crossword puzzles on authors' pages.

Terry's prompt response to a request in the Feedback Forum has fixed an issue I found particularly irksome.

That's wonderful! I had also found it irksome, but not enough to request the change. Well done and thank you (and of course Terry!)

There's a problem with the template of the 15x15 crossword, and maybe the other two as well.

It's not allowing me to place the answers in the squares around the edge of the template. It just says "an unexpected error has occurred" etc.

It allows the same answer to be placed elsewhere in the crossword

Been looking at this today, but the title (or lack thereof) is giving me trouble.

I went with the age-old advice given to authors: "Write about what you know".

Mine are all written.

Used the 'See how it looks' tab on my last crossword. Worked fine, but it now has a note on it saying 'renovate' which alarms me somewhat.

No need to worry about seeing 'renovate' Sue, I remember having the same 'alert' on some of my crosswords, when I had multiple grids awaiting submission. Afraid I'm unable to tell you why it appears, but it's apparently quite harmless.

I'm really enjoying this challenge, now that I've been able to immerse myself in it. For the first time ever I've been enticed into compiling a large crossword, which is reward in itself.

It's again not letting me put in different words around the edge of my crossword. Apparently they have some kind of sexual connotation associated with them - which I've never heard of.

This is ridiculous. These were words in common use LONG before anything unsavoury or racist or sexist or any other kind of "ist" became associated with them.

Words like "Daffodils" - a Wordsworth poem - is Wordsworth to be banned as well?

I'm seriously annoyed about this. It's ruining my crossword. I've managed to around the other NORMAL words it wouldn't accept, but Daffodils is a big word for a crossword.

Political correctness is a pile of codswallop.
