Subject: November 2023 Quiz Writing Month

Posted by: looney_tunes
Date: Oct 21 23

For the 15th edition of National Quiz Writing Month, we are giving the challenge a facelift, to concentrate on variety rather than just on volume – although, of course, we want to see a lot of new material! The site has a wealth of new formats available for quiz writers to use, and we want everyone to explore their potential.

Instead of counting questions, this year you will get 10 points for each quiz you submit that meets one of the 15 set criteria listed below. EACH QUIZ CAN ONLY COUNT ONCE, even if it fits in two spots, so you can strategise regarding how you place them. We will give credit for any quiz submitted during the month of November. If you have a template ready to submit but cannot do so in time, we will have a look at the template, and count it as long as the quiz looks ready to submit. Templates can be set up earlier, as one of the goals of this challenge is to encourage authors to get moving on those half-completed projects!

Here are the 15 criteria, worth 10 points each:
• A quiz using a Standard template (questions can be MC, FITB, T/F, 50/50, or any combination)
• A quiz using the standard Photo template.
• A quiz using the standard Match template
• A quiz using the Order template
• A quiz using the Label template
• A quiz using the Classification template
• A quiz using the Photo/Match template
• A quiz using the Mystery Sort template
• A quiz using the Fun Fill-It template
• A quiz using the Collection template
• A quiz that is an Adoption (or, if you can do so, Renovate an old quiz of your own)
• A quiz that is a Hot Topic
• A quiz that is an Old is New topic
• A quiz that is an Author Challenge
• A crossword (or alternatively, 10 single questions, each submitted to a different category)

If anyone manages to cover all 15 criteria before the end of the month, we will give an extra 50 points to an author who covers all 20 categories with their entries in the month. With careful planning, this might require another 5 quizzes; it could be a lot more if you play it comfortable on the first 15.

As you submit a quiz (you do not need to wait for it to go online), please post here so it can be recorded. You can provide the name of the quiz and the category to which it has been submitted, or just its quiz ID (the number you see in the URL just before the .html); it would be helpful if you also indicated the criterion being met, but we can check the template and make a decision on your behalf if you do not do so.

Authors need to be clear that EACH QUIZ CAN ONLY BE COUNTED FOR ONE CRITERION. The four quizzes that do not have a format specified must be in addition to another quiz in that format if both criteria are to be met. The aim here is variety, not shortcuts. Authors who change their mind about which criterion a specific quiz should be counted for just have to let us know. At the end of the month we will count how many quizzes and/or crosswords you have submitted which meet different criteria.

The names used to designate various levels of aspiration will use the same terms as in recent years, with roughly equivalent points needed:
• Personal = 10 points
• National = 20 points
• Worldwide = 50 points
• Galactic = 100 points
• Cosmic = 150 points
• Universal = 200 points

We haven’t worked out full details of the backstage mechanics, but this information should be enough to get you thinking and planning for an exciting month!

My intention is to go Cosmic, but because I've been a special sort of meticulous about my submissions this year, it's likely they won't all be submitted in November. Don't want to commit to all twenty categories, but hitting the requirements should be doable for me.

I am confident of National, optimistic target is Worldwide. November is always incredibly demanding at work - when I get around to retiring, I will have more time to devote to quiz writing!

Given that I have relied heavily on writing crosswords to go Cosmic in earlier years, I think I'll dial it back to Galactic for this year, and be happy if I manage that.

Can everyone please spread the word? I am sending messages to team leaders for teams which have previously shown interest in participating, but I think it might be helpful to have messages posted in the various prestige group boards as well. I will do something for Owls Nest, but anyone who is on another board might post something there. Or just tell your friends. The more people who are aware, the more potential participants!

I'll post on the Phoenix Rising board, as our team leader is quite busy these days and is not around as often as he used to.

Those last five (or more, depending on how widely the first 15 are spread across the categories) wildcard entries to cover all 20 categories can, of course, be crosswords.

I'll try to cover all 20 quiz categories, but I don't think I'll manage to get all 15 criteria. Let's fall back on Galactic, we'll see how far we get.

I'm a bit puzzled by this remark:
" The four quizzes that do not have a format specified must be in addition to another quiz in that format if both criteria are to be met. The aim here is variety, not shortcuts."
Do you mean that the Adoption quiz, the Author's Challenge, the Hot topic and the Old is New have to be different formats?

JanIQ - no, it means that the Adoption quiz, for example, cannot also be counted as one of the 15 criteria in terms of format. Those four can be any format you want, but if you are going to hit all 15, you need at least one of each format, plus either a crossword or ten single questions in ten different categories. So that is ten quizzes to cover the formats, four more for the criteria that do not specify format, and the crossword/single question criterion.

Last year, for a number of reasons, I fell short of the goal I would have liked to achieve (Galactic), and had to stop at Worldwide. This year I'll set myself Worldwide as a goal, at least initially, then see if I can make it any further.

In my previous post I forgot to ask whether quizzes started before November but submitted during QuiWriMo qualify. If it was stated in the criteria and I overlooked it (which wouldn't be unusual :D), I apologize beforehand.

Templates can be set up earlier. If you're looking to finish a quiz, we want to help you get there.

The only thing we hope not to see is preemptive submissions. Submitting a quiz that's fully written before November and including it in the count is kind of against the spirit.

Some of us have a few adoptees hanging around that need attention, and this is the perfect time to make it happen. And I have set up a template, and am taking notes in it, for a television show that we are watching each night. When it is finished in a few weeks, and I can see how it flows, I will write the actual quiz. It would not be in the spirit of things to write the quiz in advance and hang on until November before submitting. This does not mean you cannot plan!

We also appreciate that some quizzes written for this month will not go online until December, for one reason or another. That is why you can post here the quiz ID, and we can look at the template to verify that it is indeed complete. I say we because I can only see quizzes in my four categories - but there are others who are more powerful, and will assist as necessary.

Thank you for clarifying! At the moment, I have only one quiz in the works (another should be ready and submitted by tonight), and may decide to finish it before the end of October. However, I do have other ideas or commitments to Lounge challenges, and then, of course, there's the Author Gallery!

I think aiming for Universal can be what gets the quiz writing going. This will be a good push to try out the other formats. I'm liking the Collection quizzes that I've played a lot so i look forward to writing one or more in November.
