For the 15th edition of National Quiz Writing Month, we are giving the challenge a facelift, to concentrate on variety rather than just on volume – although, of course, we want to see a lot of new material! The site has a wealth of new formats available for quiz writers to use, and we want everyone to explore their potential.
Instead of counting questions, this year you will get 10 points for each quiz you submit that meets one of the 15 set criteria listed below. EACH QUIZ CAN ONLY COUNT ONCE, even if it fits in two spots, so you can strategise regarding how you place them. We will give credit for any quiz submitted during the month of November. If you have a template ready to submit but cannot do so in time, we will have a look at the template, and count it as long as the quiz looks ready to submit. Templates can be set up earlier, as one of the goals of this challenge is to encourage authors to get moving on those half-completed projects!
Here are the 15 criteria, worth 10 points each:
• A quiz using a Standard template (questions can be MC, FITB, T/F, 50/50, or any combination)
• A quiz using the standard Photo template.
• A quiz using the standard Match template
• A quiz using the Order template
• A quiz using the Label template
• A quiz using the Classification template
• A quiz using the Photo/Match template
• A quiz using the Mystery Sort template
• A quiz using the Fun Fill-It template
• A quiz using the Collection template
• A quiz that is an Adoption (or, if you can do so, Renovate an old quiz of your own)
• A quiz that is a Hot Topic
• A quiz that is an Old is New topic
• A quiz that is an Author Challenge
• A crossword (or alternatively, 10 single questions, each submitted to a different category)
If anyone manages to cover all 15 criteria before the end of the month, we will give an extra 50 points to an author who covers all 20 categories with their entries in the month. With careful planning, this might require another 5 quizzes; it could be a lot more if you play it comfortable on the first 15.
As you submit a quiz (you do not need to wait for it to go online), please post here so it can be recorded. You can provide the name of the quiz and the category to which it has been submitted, or just its quiz ID (the number you see in the URL just before the .html); it would be helpful if you also indicated the criterion being met, but we can check the template and make a decision on your behalf if you do not do so.
Authors need to be clear that EACH QUIZ CAN ONLY BE COUNTED FOR ONE CRITERION. The four quizzes that do not have a format specified must be in addition to another quiz in that format if both criteria are to be met. The aim here is variety, not shortcuts. Authors who change their mind about which criterion a specific quiz should be counted for just have to let us know. At the end of the month we will count how many quizzes and/or crosswords you have submitted which meet different criteria.
The names used to designate various levels of aspiration will use the same terms as in recent years, with roughly equivalent points needed:
• Personal = 10 points
• National = 20 points
• Worldwide = 50 points
• Galactic = 100 points
• Cosmic = 150 points
• Universal = 200 points
We haven’t worked out full details of the backstage mechanics, but this information should be enough to get you thinking and planning for an exciting month!

I just submitted my tenth single question for this month. One of them was written for a team quiz (Zippy Zooms XIII), while the rest were submitted for addition to the site's database. LadyNym, for your single questions, please check them when they have been accepted, and make sure you do cover ten categories. Singles often get moved backstage, and authors find they went online in a different category from the one to which they were submitted. Thanks for reminding me of the ten different categories! As usual, I had overlooked it. I can always write some more if needed. At the moment, I find it easier to write single questions than quizzes. Quick update, the last before we tally everything in early December. Please everyone post your final entries as soon as you can after the end of the month. If the quiz is online, great. If not, please provide a quiz ID number and the category to which it has been/will be submitted. You can include titles if you want, but the quiz ID is sufficient, and takes less time. I cannot actually see templates that are not yet online except for those in the categories where I edit, but I have friends who can, and will assist with checking these templates to make sure that they are actually ready to go, and can be counted. So far, there are 5 authors who have reached Galactic (at least 10 criteria met by different quizzes). The most right now is 14, but there are clearly a few with the Universal target in their sights. That will be at least 20 quizzes in the month, because there are 15 criteria to cover with separate quizzes/crosswords, and 20 categories. Of course, if the 15th criterion is met with single questions, these authors will only have covered at most 14 categories with quizzes, and need to look at another 6 quizzes, which can use any format and only need to finish covering all 20 categories. It's great to see the range of formats being used. Players who are not planning to conquer the universe are using the opportunity to expand their writing. I wrote my first Fun Fill It, and got a Hot Topic quiz out of my all-nighters watching cricket. I expect others have also experienced similar satisfying moments. So far, only one person has completed a crossword - if I can manage to get my first one wrestled into some kind of shape, I may add that to the month's achievements. I finished writing my collections quiz, for the geography category. That will get submitted after the movie quiz for the classification template, and currently the fun-fill in quiz for children is submitted. I am also working on the ten questions, as an alternative to the crossword. I wrote four so far, 1 is up 3 being looked over, had to do one which did and is part of that 3. Reply #211. I already have seven accepted in seven categories, and the remaining ones are not likely to be moved elsewhere, as they are quite clear-cut.
