Subject: November 2023 Quiz Writing Month

Posted by: looney_tunes
Date: Oct 21 23

For the 15th edition of National Quiz Writing Month, we are giving the challenge a facelift, to concentrate on variety rather than just on volume – although, of course, we want to see a lot of new material! The site has a wealth of new formats available for quiz writers to use, and we want everyone to explore their potential.

Instead of counting questions, this year you will get 10 points for each quiz you submit that meets one of the 15 set criteria listed below. EACH QUIZ CAN ONLY COUNT ONCE, even if it fits in two spots, so you can strategise regarding how you place them. We will give credit for any quiz submitted during the month of November. If you have a template ready to submit but cannot do so in time, we will have a look at the template, and count it as long as the quiz looks ready to submit. Templates can be set up earlier, as one of the goals of this challenge is to encourage authors to get moving on those half-completed projects!

Here are the 15 criteria, worth 10 points each:
• A quiz using a Standard template (questions can be MC, FITB, T/F, 50/50, or any combination)
• A quiz using the standard Photo template.
• A quiz using the standard Match template
• A quiz using the Order template
• A quiz using the Label template
• A quiz using the Classification template
• A quiz using the Photo/Match template
• A quiz using the Mystery Sort template
• A quiz using the Fun Fill-It template
• A quiz using the Collection template
• A quiz that is an Adoption (or, if you can do so, Renovate an old quiz of your own)
• A quiz that is a Hot Topic
• A quiz that is an Old is New topic
• A quiz that is an Author Challenge
• A crossword (or alternatively, 10 single questions, each submitted to a different category)

If anyone manages to cover all 15 criteria before the end of the month, we will give an extra 50 points to an author who covers all 20 categories with their entries in the month. With careful planning, this might require another 5 quizzes; it could be a lot more if you play it comfortable on the first 15.

As you submit a quiz (you do not need to wait for it to go online), please post here so it can be recorded. You can provide the name of the quiz and the category to which it has been submitted, or just its quiz ID (the number you see in the URL just before the .html); it would be helpful if you also indicated the criterion being met, but we can check the template and make a decision on your behalf if you do not do so.

Authors need to be clear that EACH QUIZ CAN ONLY BE COUNTED FOR ONE CRITERION. The four quizzes that do not have a format specified must be in addition to another quiz in that format if both criteria are to be met. The aim here is variety, not shortcuts. Authors who change their mind about which criterion a specific quiz should be counted for just have to let us know. At the end of the month we will count how many quizzes and/or crosswords you have submitted which meet different criteria.

The names used to designate various levels of aspiration will use the same terms as in recent years, with roughly equivalent points needed:
• Personal = 10 points
• National = 20 points
• Worldwide = 50 points
• Galactic = 100 points
• Cosmic = 150 points
• Universal = 200 points

We haven’t worked out full details of the backstage mechanics, but this information should be enough to get you thinking and planning for an exciting month!

I'll go with Worldwide, though that might be optimistic. Last year I did better but I likely won't have much time this year--as is apparent from my already scaled-down writing attempts for the past few months, where I've just barely scraped the Author Gallery requirements (I'm still working on the October ones, by the way!). Who knows--this might be the motivation I need to get cracking! ;)

Worldwide = 50 points. Hope to do more but don't want to over-commit

Good luck to Triviaballer! It seems to get a lot harder than last year to aim at the highest goal.

The goal this time around was to flip it out of a numbers game a bit more than we have in the past. We don't want to avoid the core of the month-- writing-- but with as many different ways to contribute nowadays, it doesn't really feel fair to put a Collection quiz on the same question tally as a crossword (for example).

People should feel free to keep tally if that's the benchmark they want to set for themselves-- same as the last decade and a half. Might be a good stretch project for anyone who hits the 200 points and wants to keep building. It's definitely achievable!

I will commit to National, probably a quiz and ten single questions, or, two quizzes.

I can resist a good challenge, and I am home again, so I'll go for Universal.

Can you lock this on the top so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle that way it's easy to find the list of what to make during the month, please?

I'll aim for Galactic. Should be doable with the other challenges that will appear.

I am upping my sights - my original goal of National is just the Gallery quizzes, after all - and definitely aim for Worldwide plus. Galactic may be too far, though.

All I can say is WOW! I need to do some thinking before I commit to a level, but, of course, I want to participate!

Do we have to set ourselves a target in advance? Or may we just post quizzes as and when, or if, we write them, and see what total we achieve?

There is no need to post a target at all. A lot of people find that is a useful motivator, as the effort to achieve their pledge spurs them on. But at the end of things, there is no public reference to it, just a description of everyone's achievements. So feel free to just write and post, if that is what works for you.

I'm going to shoot for Universal: specifically 20 crossword puzzles, one per category. I have something of a theme to tie them together.

I'll probably aim for Galactic with Cosmic as a stretch goal if I make enough progress.

One thing to be said for quiz writing month being around the corner is that it's motivating me to shift the marking I need to do this weekend so I can spend my next couple of weekends on quiz writing!

Thanks for the clarification, L-T. At this time of year I don't need any extra stress levels, which is what would result from even a self-imposed target. So now I can relax over that and see what happens, if anything.
