For the 15th edition of National Quiz Writing Month, we are giving the challenge a facelift, to concentrate on variety rather than just on volume – although, of course, we want to see a lot of new material! The site has a wealth of new formats available for quiz writers to use, and we want everyone to explore their potential.
Instead of counting questions, this year you will get 10 points for each quiz you submit that meets one of the 15 set criteria listed below. EACH QUIZ CAN ONLY COUNT ONCE, even if it fits in two spots, so you can strategise regarding how you place them. We will give credit for any quiz submitted during the month of November. If you have a template ready to submit but cannot do so in time, we will have a look at the template, and count it as long as the quiz looks ready to submit. Templates can be set up earlier, as one of the goals of this challenge is to encourage authors to get moving on those half-completed projects!
Here are the 15 criteria, worth 10 points each:
• A quiz using a Standard template (questions can be MC, FITB, T/F, 50/50, or any combination)
• A quiz using the standard Photo template.
• A quiz using the standard Match template
• A quiz using the Order template
• A quiz using the Label template
• A quiz using the Classification template
• A quiz using the Photo/Match template
• A quiz using the Mystery Sort template
• A quiz using the Fun Fill-It template
• A quiz using the Collection template
• A quiz that is an Adoption (or, if you can do so, Renovate an old quiz of your own)
• A quiz that is a Hot Topic
• A quiz that is an Old is New topic
• A quiz that is an Author Challenge
• A crossword (or alternatively, 10 single questions, each submitted to a different category)
If anyone manages to cover all 15 criteria before the end of the month, we will give an extra 50 points to an author who covers all 20 categories with their entries in the month. With careful planning, this might require another 5 quizzes; it could be a lot more if you play it comfortable on the first 15.
As you submit a quiz (you do not need to wait for it to go online), please post here so it can be recorded. You can provide the name of the quiz and the category to which it has been submitted, or just its quiz ID (the number you see in the URL just before the .html); it would be helpful if you also indicated the criterion being met, but we can check the template and make a decision on your behalf if you do not do so.
Authors need to be clear that EACH QUIZ CAN ONLY BE COUNTED FOR ONE CRITERION. The four quizzes that do not have a format specified must be in addition to another quiz in that format if both criteria are to be met. The aim here is variety, not shortcuts. Authors who change their mind about which criterion a specific quiz should be counted for just have to let us know. At the end of the month we will count how many quizzes and/or crosswords you have submitted which meet different criteria.
The names used to designate various levels of aspiration will use the same terms as in recent years, with roughly equivalent points needed:
• Personal = 10 points
• National = 20 points
• Worldwide = 50 points
• Galactic = 100 points
• Cosmic = 150 points
• Universal = 200 points
We haven’t worked out full details of the backstage mechanics, but this information should be enough to get you thinking and planning for an exciting month!

My final count was 14 criteria - well past my original target, but disappointing to run out of time to get that first crossword, and I only wrote singles for 5 categories. But this year saw me write more quizzes than I managed for many years. I finished writing my labeling quiz in the humanities category. So my collections quiz in geography has been submitted, my entertainment quiz for mystery collections is done, my standard photo quiz is done for animals, my movie quotes for classification is done, and now my label for humanities is done and they are all waiting to be sent to the editors as well. This means I won't make my goal since today is the last day and they won't all get edited in time to get up today. But at least I finished everything even if I didn't get them all up in time. I'm afraid I can't do the whole challenge. It's going to take me too long to do the Label quiz because I need to look for an image file that's the right size AND has the correct licence, and I don't have time. Real life got in the way and the second quiz has questions and answers, but still needs I.I. that I don't want to rush through. Dear Looney and editors, in November, 6 of my quizzes got online and I have another submitted, and 3 more sitting in the queue for December, so thank you for this great challenge that really spurred me on and I've enjoyed making quizzes very much. My aim was two quizzes with an eye on 5 so I'm thrilled to have reached Worldwide. I think I've already registered 3 quizzes covering Adopted, Classify, and Fun-fill-it. Ponycargirl, QuiWriMo is based on either FT time or local time. i used local time because that was a good time for me to start with a full day (before the new month arrived at 4pm ADT), but it was still October FT time. My last post was made before heading to bed on 30 November local time - I am now up starting December, and have run out of time.
