Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was established in 1922, after the Russian revolution. Russia was much the largest part of it, and its capital city, Moscow, was the capital of the Soviet Union. The government was based on one-party rule by the Communist party. Leaders of the country have included Vladimir Lenin, Josef Stalin, Nikita Krushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, and Mikhail Gorbachev. The last of these was responsible for increasing freedoms and restructuring in the country, which eventually led to the dissolution of the union in 1991.
In Cyrillic script the Russian for 'The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics' is 'Союз Советских Социалистических Республик', hence the abbreviation, which looks like CCCP, as seen on space suits and sporting kit.
The wrong answers were members of the Warsaw Pact group of countries. They signed a treaty in 1955 in Warsaw, Poland to act as a balance against the sphere of influence of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). The other countries were Czechoslovakia, Albania and East Germany. Albania left in 1968, and East Germany withdrew after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990. The pact was dissolved in 1991.
