Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
"The Red Vineyard" is the only known painting to have been sold during Vincent's van Gogh's own lifetime. His popularity after death can be mainly attributed to his sister-in-law, Johanna Bonger, Theo van Gogh's wife.
Theo died just 6 months after Vincent. Johanna was left with all Theo's estate which included all Vincent's estate of unsold works, including hundreds of paintings. She set about negotiating with galleries to stage exhibitions and lending the artworks, not selling. Her aim was to create the market for his work and her skill paid off. She later produced the letters between the brothers to help create an interest; this too was a skilful move, and a Van Gogh painting can nowadays command the highest prices in the art world.
The other artists referenced in the quiz were:
"The Hay Wain", Constable.
"Guernica", Picasso.
"A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte", Seurat.
"The Night Watch", Rembrandt.

"Dogs Playing Poker", Coolidge.
