February 23, 2004 was the day Stern announced Melendez's decision to leave for the "Tonight Show". March 29, 2004 was Melendez's first day as announcer of the "Tonight Show". July 1, 2004 was the day Melendez's replacement, Richard Christy, was announced.

The very first broadcast had an amusing variation. Instead of "It's a bird!" the announcer said "It's a big bird!" Shades of "Sesame Street"! The phrasing beginning "Look! Up in the sky! was used in the television program in conjunction with "Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!" which began the show.
The television introduction was introduced in the 1940 Superman cartoons and was adopted eventually by the radio program several years before the debut of the television program. No verbal introduction as used in the two Columbia live action serials (which were, in fact, not entirely live action because in the first serial Superman's flight was drawn).

Each contestant had a tryout week on the show to showcase their talents and make a case for why they should be hired. After all contestants had auditioned, an Internet poll was opened in which listeners could vote for who should be hired. On July 1, 2004 Howard Stern announced Richard Christy had received the greatest proportion of votes (30%), declaring him winner and offering him a permanent role on the show. Also of interest, second place vote getter Sal "the Stockbroker" Governale (24%) was also hired.
