1. Keno slips dating back to between 205 and 187 BC have been found in which country, making it quite possibly the oldest to have a lottery?

Answer: China

Interesting Information:
Obviously very little is known about such an old lottery but it is believed by historians that this lottery was used to finance major undertakings such as the construction of the Great Wall. This early version of Keno was known as the "white pigeon game", so named for the birds that flew from village to village with the results.
So little is known due to the lack of records, not because the winning participants ticked the "no publicity" box. Difficulty: Average.

Interesting Information:
Texas Hold Em, originally just called "Holdem" dates back to the early 20th century as a variation of poker. But it didn't really catch on until it was played at the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas in the late '60s. It has since become the most popular tournament game in poker. Difficulty: Hard.

4. In 1899, the first modern slot machine was designed by Charles Fey of San Francisco. It was named for one of the symbols on the reels. What was the name of this early "one-armed bandit"?

Answer: the Liberty Bell

Interesting Information:
Before the Liberty Bell, slot machines had five reels and playing cards were used as symbols, but it was difficult to assign payouts with the many combinations which could result. Three reel slot machines payed a player when the combination of three symbols in a row was made. Jackpot was made when three liberty bells lined up. Prizes were not always monetary but could be cigars or chewing gum. They were very popular in their time. Difficulty: Hard.

5. After getting my chips, I am going to go to the poker table. Which hand is the best possible hand in Texas hold 'em?

Answer: Ace, King, Queen, Ten, Jack (spades)

Interesting Information:
The correct answer is called a royal flush. Having an Ace, King, Queen, Ten, Nine of spades is called a flush. That is when all cards are in the same suit, but not of specific values (ascending in increments of one). Getting all four aces is called "four of a kind," and is the third best hand (behind a straight flush, this is five cards in order and in the same suit but not a royal flush). A royal flush is the best possible straight flush in a suit. Having a king with your four aces makes no difference. Difficulty: Hard.

6. The first game I encountered that I only knew the basic rudiments of was craps, just like the title of the quiz. I did know that the name 'craps' came from the French word, 'crapaud'. What does 'crapaud' mean?

Answer: Toad

Interesting Information:
The game of craps is said to have origins back in the days of the crusades. All that is really needed to enjoy a game of craps is a pair of dice, and your winnings depend on whether you're able to keep up a streak while shooting them before rolling a seven to clear the table (unless it's on the initial roll where a seven wins for you).

In Las Vegas, craps is played by the regular tourists and the high-rollers alike. Tables with five-dollar minimum bets were not hard to find, but I was able to observe the $100 tables and saw people win and lose thousands of dollars on a single roll. Difficulty: Hard.

Answer: Daily Star

Newspaper bingo, in which a bingo card was delivered to every household in UK and bingo numbers printed daily in the respective paper was huge in the UK in 1980s, so big in fact that even "The Times" got in on the act. Answer: 666

Interesting Information:
Interestingly the numbers add up to 666, a number infamous for it's relation to the devil. Roulette was an amalgamation of a number of games and was popular in Paris in the late 1700s. The game is played with a small ball spinning around a central wheel that is divided into a number of slots, each representing a number and a color. Players make bets on the next number to fall by placing markers on a rectangular table top divided into squares with numbers and colors in them. Bets may also be made on whether a certain color falls or odd or even numbers fall. It is mindless fun. Difficulty: Hard.

19. At the craps table I noticed that when the point was "off", there was one bet that everyone commonly bet. What was this bet?

Answer: Pass

Interesting Information:
A "pass" bet will win you money if you roll a seven or an eleven, and will lose you your bet if you happen to "crap out", meaning, you throw a two, three, or twelve. Any other number and your bet goes to that number, and the number is considered "on". This means that you will win your money only when you throw that number again, but will lose it (and any other new bets you may have placed in that time) if you roll a seven.

A "come" bet and a "don't come" bet can only be played when the point is on, and an "on the hop" bet is a one-time bet that tries to predict what the next roll will be. It's rarely played, but it can get you 15:1 odds, or even 30:1 if you correctly predict a doubles roll. Difficulty: Hard.

Come, Don't come, On the Hop

20. With most traditional Keno games, the balls used (numbered one to 80) are stored and mixed by air in a large glass bowl. what is the name of the device used to draw (or "call") and store the winning numbers after the game has closed?

Answer: The "Rabbit Ears"

Interesting Information:
After the balls are mixed, the "caller" will operate a lever to allow a single ball to be forced up through a narrow neck (or "goose"), and then up to one section of the "rabbit ear". The caller will continue until the ear is full (the first 10 numbers), then close that section, open the next ear, and "call" the remaining 10 numbers the same way. At the same time the numbers are drawn, the caller will press the corresponding number on a light board, so that the winning numbers may be displayed on the Keno boards throughout the casino. In the days before computerized Keno, another employee (the "punch") would operate a drill press to drill holes through a book of "inside" tickets (with the same corresponding game number as the current game being called), to create overlays (or "draws") for use to determine the winning numbers "caught" on a ticket. 30. Trembling with excitement, you approach the betting window. What are the things you should tell the clerk at the betting window, in the correct order, for him or her to process your bet?

Answer: Track, number of the race, number of the horse, amount and type of bet

Interesting Information:
Let's say you are at Deadbeat Downs. Why does the clerk need you to tell him the name of the track? Doesn't he know where he is? Of course he does, but nowadays most tracks take bets not only for races at their own track, but for races at other tracks as well. You may be able to bet on races at a dozen different tracks. So he needs to know at which track the race you are betting on is taking place. Next, he needs to know which race you are betting on, because most tracks offer advance wagering. You might want to bet the seventh race on the card, but can't wait around until it is run; you just want to make your bet, go home or go to work, and check the results later. You never bet a horse by name. You always bet it by the number it has been assigned in the race. The clerks don't have time to memorize the names of all the horses in all the races at all the tracks. Finally, you tell them the amount and type of bet, in this case, "$2 to win." Let's say Dapper Dan is horse number 6 in the first race. You would tell the clerk, "Deadbeat Downs, first race, number 6, $2 to win."

Don't worry if you make a mistake. Most clerks will figure out what you want, and will help you if they are not too busy. But one thing is very important: don't get in line to bet until you know which horse or horses you want to bet on, and how much you want to bet. It is considered very rude to the other patrons behind you in line if you wait until you reach the betting window to make up your mind! Difficulty: Hard.
