Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Asian city is known as "the Monte Carlo of the Orient" due to its large casinos such as the Venetian and the Lisboa?

Answer: Macau

The Venetian in Macau (a special administrative region of China) was the biggest casino in the world when it opened in August 2007, with over half of its 10,000,000 square feet dedicated to gambling areas. The remaining space is used as a hotel. Macau legalised gambling in the mid 1800s, and has relied on it for a large proportion of its GDP for decades.
2. The Tusk Rio Casino was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere when it opened. It is inspired by the city of Rio de Janeiro, but is it located in Brazil?

Answer: No

Opened in 2002, the Tusk Rio is located in Klerksdorp, South Africa. It was built with 70 game rooms, all around the theme of Rio's Carnival.
3. What is true about the large British casino Aspers Westfield Stratford City, opened in 2011?

Answer: It is located inside a shopping centre

While relatively small by world standards, at around 65,000 square feet, this was Great Britain's largest casino upon opening. The casino does close, but only for 24 hours a year, on Christmas Day.
4. In 2014, which South American country, the second largest by size, had by far the most casinos on the continent?

Answer: Argentina

At the start of 2014, Argentina had more than 85 casinos operating. Chile underwent a rapid expansion in their casino industry after receiving the go-ahead to build major resorts in 2005. Ecuador shut down the last of their casinos in 2012 after a large public vote to shut the industry down.
5. Australia's large Crown Casino, opening in 1994, is in its largest city, Sydney.

Answer: False

Crown Casino, one of the Southern Hemisphere's largest, is in Australia's second biggest city, Melbourne. The complex is over 500,000 square metres in size. In 2013, a high roller reportedly stole $33 million from the casino by illegally viewing video tapes, in a real life version of the "Ocean's Eleven" heist.
6. Which country, probably more famous for its mountains than gambling venues, was the second Asian country to open a casino?

Answer: Nepal

Nepal's casinos have had some controversy over the years, largely due to a longstanding law that their own citizens aren't allowed to gamble: they are strictly for tourists. They generally operate out of large hotels in the capital Kathmandu.
7. Atlantic City's numerous casinos helped it towards achieving one of the USA's lowest unemployment rates in September 2014.

Answer: False

In fact despite the more than 30,000 people employed in Atlantic City's casinos, it had one of the USA's highest unemployment rates in 2014, at over 13%.
8. One of the most profitable casinos in the world has been the Oasis Hotel Casino Resort. Operating from 1998-2000, which politically volatile part of the world was this casino in?

Answer: The Middle East

The Oasis operated in Jericho, which is part of the Palestinian Territories. It attracted thousands of visitors on a daily basis from nearby Israel, but was forced to close in 2000 due to political issues in the area. Several Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman, have banned gambling altogether and are unlikely to ever open casinos despite their potential to draw tourists.
9. Which African nation has a long history of a gambling culture going back to around 3000 BC, and in the early 21st Century had the vast majority of casinos in North Africa?

Answer: Egypt

There is archeological evidence of a thriving gambling culture in Ancient Egypt, but also interestingly of efforts by ancient governments to stop or curtail the activity. Egypt had a large casino culture in the early 21st Century, with over twenty operating in Cairo alone.
10. Foxwoods Casino was the largest in the USA when it opened in 1992. But it's not in Las Vegas, Atlantic City or even Reno. Where is it located?

Answer: Connecticut

By the end of 2014, Foxwoods was still the largest casino complex in the USA, with nearly 8,000 gaming machines and over 350 table games. In late 2014, North America had more than 1,000 casinos in operation, the most of any continent.
