Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Boxman

Answer: Craps

The boxman is the casino employee who sits at the centre of the table on the dealers' side. They oversee the entire game, supervising the stickman and base dealers, managing chip exchanges, and ensuring that all bets are handled correctly. As the authority figure at the table, the boxman promotes fair play and resolves any disputes that arise.
2. Shooter

Answer: Craps

The shooter is the player who rolls the dice. Each round begins with the come-out roll, after which the shooter continues rolling until they "seven out" (roll a 7 after a point has been set). Other players place their bets on the shooter's rolls, meaning everyone's outcome is tied to their performance.
3. Pass Line

Answer: Craps

The Pass Line bet is the most popular in craps and is placed before the come-out roll. It wins immediately if the shooter rolls a 7 or 11, and loses if they roll a 2, 3 or 12. If any other number is rolled, a point is set, and the bet wins if the shooter rolls the point again before rolling a 7. This bet has one of the lowest house edges in the casino.
4. Hard Way

Answer: Craps

A Hard Way bet is placed on a specific pair (4, 6, 8 or 10) being rolled "the hard way" - as doubles (e.g. 2+2 for a hard 4). They lose if an "easy way" (such as 1+3 for a 4) or a 7 is rolled first. Although these bets pay out more than Pass Line bets, they have a significantly higher house edge.
5. Corner Bet

Answer: Roulette

A corner bet, also known as a square bet, covers four numbers that meet at one corner of the betting layout (for example, 1, 2, 4 and 5). If the ball lands on any of these numbers, the bet pays 8 to 1. Corner bets strike a good balance between risk and payout, giving players four chances to win with a single chip.
6. Single Zero

Answer: Roulette

The defining feature of European Roulette wheels is the single zero (0), as opposed to the double zero (00) found on American wheels. This reduces the house edge to 2.7%, significantly improving players' odds compared to the 5.26% edge on American wheels.
7. Red/Black

Answer: Roulette

Red/black is one of the simplest and most popular roulette bets. Players bet on whether the winning number will be red or black. These bets are considered "even-money" wagers, meaning you nearly double your money if you win (with a 1:1 payout), but lose if the ball lands on zero.
8. Straight Up

Answer: Roulette

A straight up bet is a wager on a single number. Players place their chip directly on the corresponding number on the betting layout. This bet has the highest payout of all the standard bets, paying out at 35 to 1 in most casinos (sometimes described as "36 to 1").
9. Hit

Answer: Blackjack

Asking the dealer for another card to improve your hand total is known as hitting. Players signal this by tapping the table or making a hand gesture. The aim is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over (busting). Deciding whether to hit is one of the most important aspects of blackjack strategy.
10. Stand

Answer: Blackjack

To "stand" means that you are satisfied with your hand as it is and do not want any more cards. Players signal this by waving their hand horizontally over their cards. Knowing when to stand is crucial - standing too early may result in a weak hand, while standing too late may result in going bust.
11. Double Down

Answer: Blackjack

The Double Down option allows you to double your original bet after receiving your first two cards, but you only receive one more card. This option is useful when you have a good chance of beating the dealer, for example, if your total is 11 and the dealer's upcard is weak.
12. Insurance

Answer: Blackjack

Insurance is a side bet that is offered when the dealer's upcard is an ace. Players can bet up to half of their initial stake on the assumption that the dealer has Blackjack. If the dealer does have blackjack, the insurance bet pays out at odds of 2 to 1, which effectively breaks even on the round. However, most strategy guides advise against using insurance in the long term.
13. Omaha

Answer: Poker

Omaha is a community card game in which each player receives four hole cards and must use exactly two of these, together with three of the five community cards, to make the best possible hand. This rule distinguishes Omaha from Texas Hold'em, in which any combination of hole and community cards can be used.
14. River

Answer: Poker

The river is the fifth and final community card dealt face up in community card games such as Omaha and Texas Hold'em. It completes the board, after which the last round of betting takes place. The decisions made at this stage determine the final outcome of the hand.
15. Straight Flush

Answer: Poker

A straight flush is a hand containing five consecutive cards of the same suit. For example, it could be 6-7-8-9-10 of hearts. It ranks just below a Royal Flush and is one of the highest-paying hands in poker. The odds of achieving a straight flush are very low, making it a rare but rewarding outcome.
16. Hole Cards

Answer: Poker

Hole cards are the two cards dealt to each player at the start of the hand, which are kept private. Only the player who was dealt them can see these cards. They form the basis of a player's strategy and are combined with the community cards to create the strongest possible hand.
