41 What does Paul say the deacons should be found to be?
Answer: blameless

It says in I Timothy 3:10, "And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless."

The deacons are leaders in the church, so it makes sense that they should be found blameless, as they set an example for others in the church.

42 "All Scripture is God-breathed..." When, according to Paul, had Timothy first been introduced to scripture?
Answer: As an infant

"... from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3 v. 15-17)

These words are often used in discussing the inerrancy of scripture (with different interpretations!) but in their original context have an emphasis on the "all" rather than the "God-breathed". Here, Paul is passing on the metaphorical baton to Timothy. The teaching that Timothy has received will be a solid foundation from which to continue (2 Timothy 3 v. 14). Reading the scriptures, with which Timothy has been acquainted since infancy, will make him "thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3 v. 17). Paul then exhorts Timothy in his God-given work, summed up as:
"But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry" (2 Timothy 4 v. 5).
Finally we learn that Paul has "fought the fight", "completed the race" and is looking forward to a "crown of righteousness" (2 Timothy 4 v. 7-8). It will be down to Timothy to continue Paul's work.

44 In II Timothy 4:11 whom does Paul ask Timothy to find and bring to him?
Answer: Mark

All these men are named at the end of Paul's letter. Crescens is mentioned only here in the Bible, but was remembered as an early bishop and martyr in Galatia. Luke is the author of the third gospel and Paul's companion and biographer, and Titus is the recipient of Paul's letter to Titus. Mark is presumably the same man as the nephew of Barnabas, who left their first missionary journey and caused a serious rift between the two (Acts 15:36-40). Paul's words here, "I find him a useful helper in my work", shows that the two had reconciled their differences.

45 According to II Timothy, who withstood Moses?
Answer: Jannes and Jambres

It says in II Timothy 3:8, "Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith."

The Holman Illustrated Pocket Dictionary says that Jannes and Jambres were men who opposed Moses and Aaron. Their names do not appear in the Old Testament itself, but scholars believe that they were some of the magicians who sought to mimic the miracles performed in Egypt.

46 What kind of fables are the readers told to refuse?
Answer: old wives'

It says in I Timothy 4:7, "But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness."

When Paul talks about "old wives' fables" he is telling his readers not to argue over myths that have no Biblical backing.

47 Practical responsibility #5: Issuing rebukes Paul offers an imaginative way to ensure that any necessary correction be administered with sensitivity. What does he urge Timothy to imagine about the person being rebuked?
Answer: That they are a member of Timothy's own family

"Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity." (1 Timothy 5 v. 1-2)

We know little about Timothy's own family except that:
(a) the family lived in Lystra;
(b) his father was Greek and his mother, who was a Christian, was Jewish (Acts 16 v. 1); and
(c) his mother's name was Eunice and his grandmother, Lois (2 Timothy 1 v. 5).

Paul had him circumcised (Acts 16 v. 3) and this has led to speculation that Timothy's father was dead by this stage. If this is true it would add poignancy to Timothy's administration of the widows' list.

48 According to Paul's advice to Timothy in the King James Version, how are women supposed to dress?
Answer: They should dress in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety.

In 1 Timothy 2: verse 9, Paul writes "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broidered hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array". This advice may have come as a relief to husbands and fathers, who could then have been spared the high cost of purchasing expensive jewellery for their wives and daughters!

50 Timothy was instructed to let no man discourage him because of his young age. What did Paul instruct him to do?
Answer: "Do not neglect your gift."

After Paul had given Timothy instruction on how to delegate things in the church, he encouraged Timothy by saying, "Command and teach these things. Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you." (I Timothy 4:11-14, NIV)
