The Catahoula leopard dog got its name from Catahoula Parish in Louisiana. The herding dog is called the Louisiana Catahoula leopard dog by the AKC and is the official dog of the southern state.
In the eighteenth Century, French settlers in Louisiana bred local dogs with Beauceron dogs to create the breed.
