Dogs in the working group are correctly named as they are larger breeds who are often used for helping humans with jobs. Police, search and rescue, pulling carts, and guarding property are all typical duties of a breed in this category.
The Siberian husky, Samoyed, and the Akita are all well suited for endurance, winter activities including sledding, and each has dense fur to help deal with the elements. Both the Samoyed and Siberian husky have their origin in Siberia, Russia. The Akita has a Japanese origin.
The working dogs that are known for their protection skills include the Rottweiler, Doberman pinscher, Great Dane, mastiff, and Komondor. These breeds are intelligent, strong, have a high drive, and are easily trained for their roles in protection. Komondors are known for their long stringy fur and are popular for livestock protection. The Rottweiler, Doberman, and mastiff are each large breeds that are very loyal and great choices for protection in the home. Each has a gentle spirit but can quickly escalate when sensing danger. Great Danes are the largest breed on this quiz and known for their protection skills and their ability to pull a lot of weight on a sled.
The lovable giant breed known as the Saint Bernard is known for mountain rescues. The breed is famous for its work in the Swiss Alps. They have a thick coat which enables the Saint Bernard to handle colder weather conditions. The boxer is a type of mastiff that originated in Germany where it was used for big game hunting and personal protection.
The six dogs that didn't make the working dog list are all considered non-sporting or herding dogs by the American Kennel Club. The shocking one on the list is the Dalmatian which is often seen being used as a working dog with fire departments. Border collies are part of the herding dog group. Shiba inu and Chinese shar-pei are each from Asia and part of the non-sporting groups. The popular breeds, Boston terrier and bulldog, are also included in the non-sporting AKC classification.
