Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What colour would you expect the rare "ghost" lobster to be?

Answer: white

Only one in every 100,000,000 lobsters caught comes in the albino variety - also known as "ghost" or "crystal" because of the translucent, pearl-like quality of these rare creatures' shells. Due to the absence of the pigment astaxanthin, which is responsible for most lobsters turning bright red when cooked, ghost lobsters will keep their pale colour even after cooking. Though lobsters are typically greenish-blue or greenish-brown, they can be found in a variety of other colours, including red, yellow, orange and split-coloured.

The New England Aquarium in Boston has a collection of multicoloured lobsters - known as the Lobster Rainbow - on display.

2. This highly sociable rodent has dichromatic vision, is herbivorous, and has a call similar to a barking dog. Laura Ingalls probably had lots of these where she lived.

Answer: prairie dog

The tunnels made by prairie dogs help prevent erosion and run off, as well as channeling rain into the water table.

3. Most adult species of salamanders don't have lungs. How do they breathe?

Answer: Through their skin

Most species of adult salamanders lose their gills as they become adults and survive by breathing through their skin. The skin exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide just like our lungs do. Other species retain their gills and live mostly underwater. A rare species grows lungs to replace the gills.

4. What kind of crab moves from one shell to the other as it outgrows the former?

Answer: Hermit crab

Hermit crabs take up residence in an empty gastropod shell since they do not have a shell of their own for protection. As the crab grows, it has to abandon the smaller shell for a larger one.

6. Which of these animals are responsible for planting trees by the thousands?

Answer: Squirrels

Tree squirrels are known to store acorns in the ground. The acorns might be left till they start growing. Next time you see a squirrel, remember that they contribute massively to the Earth's forest resources.

7. Which of these dog breeds does NOT originate from Germany?

Answer: St. Bernard

The St. Bernard Dog, probably the most famous breed of mountain rescue dogs, was first bred by monks in Switzerland in the early 18th century.

8. The little penguin, or blue penguin, is often known as what in Australia?

Answer: Fairy penguin

The fairy penguin is so called because of its small stature - it is the smallest of the penguin species. It is coloured bluey-grey and white, hence the name blue penguin. The penguins can be found round the coasts of New Zealand and the southern half of Australia. One of the biggest colonies is on Phillip Island, near Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

It is a major tourist attraction to watch some of the 30,000 penguins returning from a day at sea to their burrows on land just after sunset every day.

9. Anguinae is a subfamily of legless lizards. Why do they also have the name "glass snakes?"

Answer: Their tails break off

Because their skins are reinforced by bones called osteoderms, the bodies of glass snakes become brittle easily and their tails often break and fall off. They have the ability to regrow their tails, thus restarting the cycle.

10. The Echidna is an odd animal - one of the very few egg laying mammals still around. What is another very odd fact about the Echidna?

Answer: Male echidnas have a four headed penis

Yes - they have a four headed penis. They alternate the heads used during each intercourse session, using two at a time. Odd indeed. They actually can live a very long lifespan (40-50 years), eat ants and termites (not fruit), and the young are called puggles.
