While many sources list the goldfish as the ONLY animal with this sight ability, it must be stated that vision studies on animals are not complete, and there are many other fish in the sea. But goldfish vision has been extensively studied, and their eyesight is believed to be highly developed.

The gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) owes its common name to the hollow protuberance that develops with age at the end of the males' snout, resembling the "ghara" - an earthenware pot commonly used in India and Pakistan to store drinking water and keep it cool.

This crocodilian is a large animal (males can reach a length of 6 m/19.8 ft), characterized by a very long, narrow snout. Unlike other crocodilians, it is harmless to humans, and feeds mainly on fish and other aquatic fauna, as it very rarely leaves the water. Once abundant in most major river systems of the northern Indian subcontinent, the gharial is now a critically endangered species (IUCN 2017), because of hunting and habitat loss caused by human activity.

It is now protected in both India and Nepal, and there have been numerous attempts to reintroduce it in parts of its former range. Depicted in artifacts from the Indus Valley Civilization (which flourished over 4,000 years ago), the gharial has also been identified with the mythical creature Makara, the "vahana" (vehicle) of the river goddess Ganga and the wind god Varuna.
