Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Here's the first sentence containing a card game hidden within it: "The drum my marching band uses is a Yamaha." Hiding within that sentence is a card game. Figure out what it is, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Answer: slang for alcoholic

You can find the card game in the sentence: "The dRUM MY marching band..."

In the card game Rummy, "knocking" is a key move in which a player ends the round early by declaring they have a low enough total value of unmatched cards (known as "deadwood") to score. The player may knock only after drawing a card from the stock or discard pile, and before discarding their card; the player says "knock," or actually knocks on the table, and discards a card face down to signal the end of the round. Then the player lays out their hand, separating the sets or runs from their unmatched cards. Then all the other players also lay out their hands, and may lay off their unmatched cards onto the knocker's sets and runs. The round is then scored based on the value of the unmatched cards in each hand. So, the overall strategy behind knocking is to do so when you think your hand's unmatched cards will be lower than the opponents unmatched cards.
2. Where is the card game hidden in this sentence? "The children made Playdoh Hello Kitty characters." Concealed within that sentence is a card game. Find it, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

In the card game Oh Hell, aces are high with cards ranked from 2 (the lowest) up to Ace (the highest) in each suit. During play, the highest card of the suit that is led wins the trick, unless a trump card is played, in which case the highest trump card wins. When players assess the strength of their hand before gameplay, they take into account the high value of aces when bidding how many tricks they will take in a round.
3. And the sentence is: "Studying the arts would teach aesthetics in school." Somewhere within that sentence is a card game. Spot which card game, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

In the game of Hearts, winning tricks is not the aim, especially if the trick a player wins in a round has cards with the suit of hearts. Also, the Queen of Spades is bad to win, heaping 13 points on your score as opposed to one point for each heart. Like golf, the lower your score the better. One bit of tricky strategy though is to win ALL the hearts as well as the Queen of Spades. That's called shooting the moon, and if a player achieves that, he can either subtract 26 points from his score (the sum of the 13 hearts won and the 13-point Queen of Spades), or that player could add 26 points to each of the opponents.
4. Here is the next sentence: "The sewer couldn't handle all the runoff from the rains." Somewhere within that sentence is a card game. Find where that card game is, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Uno was trademarked in 1971 by Merle Robbins, a barber who was inspired by the card-dumping game Crazy Eights. Robbins made his Uno faster-paced. The toy company Mattel bought the rights in 1992. Both Uno and Crazy Eights are "shedding-card" type games where players discard cards by matching suits or numbers. In Crazy Eights, the wild card is the 8, and in Uno the wild card is...the "WILD" card.

In Bridge, North, South, East, and West refer to the four players' positions at the table, matching the same orientation that those directional positions are on a weather vane for example. So, North and South are partners and sit facing each other across the table from each other. Likewise, East and West are partners and also sit accordingly. The game proceeds in a clockwise rotation: North followed by East, then South, then West.

Spades was conceived in the late 1930s, becoming very popular on college campuses first in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is a strategic game in which the trump suit in this trick-taking game is always spades. The gameplay is derived from Whist and Bridge. Played with a standard deck, it soon became popular among U.S. soldiers during World War II. In the bidding, players predict how many tricks they'll take; underbidding is penalized, but overbidding can also hurt if too many "bags" (tricks over the number predicted) are accumulated.
7. Can you find the card game in this sentence? "Fourfold maidens and a princely pauper were the fairy tale's cast of characters." Concealed within that sentence is a card game. Which clue applies to that card game?

Old Maid is likely to have migrated to ancient Europe from Asia. The earliest known published rules were in 1831 by Eliza Leslie in America. Gameplay usually involves removing three of the Queens, leaving one, which is the titular "Old Maid", the card that players don't want to be left with in their hand. Other versions can involve having two Queens in the deck or even three Queens, thusly "Two Old Maids", or "Three Old Maids".
8. In this sentence, can you find the card game that is hiding? "If you aerosol it, Airedales will smell it because they have a keen sense of smell." Your task here is to find where a card game is hiding, and then see which of the clues applies.

Solitaire is of course a card game that one person plays by himself. There are many many versions. Klondike is the version that most people know and that comes pre-loaded on many computers: The setup has 7 columns with the number of cards increasing by one from left to right, with only the card at the bottom of each pile face-up. There is a stock pile for drawing cards, and a waste pile. And four foundation piles, each pile a different suit building up from Ace to King.
Yukon is similar to Klondike but with all cards in the column set-up face-up, and no stock pile or waste pile. There are 6 columns, with from left to right, 1 card, 6 cards, 7, 8, 9, and lastly 5 cards.
In Monte Carlo, all cards are dealt face-up in a 5x10 grid, leaving 2 cards remaining. Gameplay involves removing pairs of adjacent cards whether horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, that match in rank, like a 7 of hearts and a 7 of spades, or Jack of Diamonds and Jack of Clubs, etc. After removing pairs, you close the gaps by shifting cards left or up. The game ends when no more pairs can be removed.

Solitaire is known as Patience in some parts of the world.
9. Here is the next sentence that has a card game hidden within it: "If you're gonna sell lampblack, jack up the price cuz amorphous carbon and tar are expensive." A card game is in that sentence. Find where, and then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Answer: concealed weapon

You can find the card game in the sentence: "If you're gonna sell lampBLACK, JACK up..." Blackjack and Twenty-One are essentially the same game. A player faces off against a dealer, with the objective of obtaining a hand value as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it, and also to beat the dealer's hand at the same time.

The number cards (2 through 10) are valued at whatever their number is. The face cards (Jack, Queen, King) each have a value of 10. The Ace can be valued at either 1 or 11, whichever amount is more beneficial to the player. Player and the dealer each get 2 cards, with one of the dealer's cards face-up.

The player can "hit", that is, get another card if he thinks it will improve his hand, or he could "stand", that is, stop getting additional cards.

The dealer then reveals his face-down card and keeps dealing himself more cards until he gets to a value of 17 or more. He must take a card if he has 16 or lower. If he "busts" (goes over 21), the player wins.
10. Here is the last sentence: "Tombac is an alloy of copper and zinc, so with tombac carats aren't a factor as they are with diamonds." A hidden card game in that sentence is what you're looking for. Then see which of the clue answers best applies.

Answer: sounds like acrobat

You can find the card game in the sentence: "...so with tomBAC CARATs aren't a factor..."

Punto Banco and Macau are versions of Bacarrat. All those other games listed in the answer choices were phrases used in the hilarious card game scene in the movie "Bang The Drum Slowly" when the ball players in the hotel lobby pay TEGWAR, The Exciting Game Without Any Rules, luring in onlookers eager to play cards with baseball stars.
In Baccarat, participants bet on whether the player will win, or the Banker will win, or it will be a tie.
The dealer gives two cards each to the Player and Banker. The card values are face value for Two through Nine, but for the 10, Jack, Queen, and King their values are 0 for each. That's because the game goes by the final digit in their normal value which for instance in the case of 10 is zero. The Ace is worth 1 point. If the total value of the two cards in a hand exceeds 9, then only the last digit is counted. So for instance, a hand with a 7 and an 8 would be 5 (because 7 + 8 = 15, and 5 is the final digit).
Now then, if the Player's hand's total is 0-5, he must draw a third card. If his total is 6 or 7, he stands, takes no more cards. If his total is 8 or 9, that's called a "Natural" and neither he, nor the Banker take a third card. In fact, if the Banker's hand is an 8 or 9, that's also a "Natural" and nobody takes a third card.
If neither hand has a natural, a third card may be drawn for Player or Banker:
Player draws a third card if their total is 0-5, but stands if it's 6 or 7.
Banker's third card depends on both the Banker's total and the Player's third card (if drawn).
The rules get more complicated. Believe it or not. But here they are:
If the Player stands (or draws no new cards), the Banker draws with a hand total of 0-5 and stands with a hand total of 6 or 7. All other hands are dependent on the third card the Player draws:
If the Player's third card is 9, 10, face-card or Ace, the Banker draws when he has a 0-3, and stays with a 4-7.
If the Player's third card is 8, the Banker draws when he has a 0-2, and stays with a 3-7.
If the Player's third card is 6 or 7, the Banker draws when he has a 0-6, and stays with a 7.
If the Player's third card is 4 or 5, the Banker draws when he has a 0-5, and stays with a 6-7.
If the Player's third card is 2 or 3, the Banker draws when he has a 0-4, and stays with a 5-7.
