Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. High Aim on Leak Hidden
Answer: I am only kidding
This phrase comes in handy when people don't get your sense of humor, and start to look upset because they took an ironic or sarcastic comment seriously. To make the clarification slightly shorter, you might say, "Juice kitten (just kidding)".
2. Sly Stun Yen
Answer: Sliced onion
Onions are famous for the irritating chemicals released when they are sliced, which cause the eyes to water. There are all sorts of tips on how to reduce the irritation, but most people just go with slicing and dicing as fast as they can to get it over with. Freezing the onion before trying to produce neat slices under running water with a cloth covering your face is just a bit too tricky!
3. Tall Cure Rear Ruff
Answer: Talk your ear off
Someone who talks your ear off has a lot to say, and the implication is that it is not inspired conversation. The statement is usually made out of their earshot, as advice to avoid getting cornered by someone who will just keep rattling on and on, whether you are interested or not. Or in retrospect, describing a particularly tedious dinner party with such a person seated beside you.
4. Spore It Skier
Answer: Sports gear
Most sports require some specific equipment, or gear, to engage in them fully. A skier, for example, will need suitable skis, boots and poles, as well as appropriate warm clothing for being outdoors in freezing conditions. Unless, of course, this is a water skier, who will need skis, a boat with driver to pull them through the water by means of a rope whose handle they can grab.
A life vest is a good idea.
5. A Naughty Oat Ape
Answer: An audio tape
Audio tape (also written audiotape) is rather outmoded in this digital age, but it used to be ubiquitous. The tape produces a magnetic record of the sound vibrations that come into the recording machine; running the tape through a playback machine reproduces the sounds again.
The tape could be held in a metal or plastic spool, or inside a plastic cassette. The latter was easier to handle, but the former allowed the use of larger tapes, which reproduced the sound more accurately.
6. Hike Hen Sit Hen Year Rise
Answer: I can see it in your eyes
Proverbially, the eyes are the window to the soul, and many a song has been written alluding to the fact that the truth is in someone's eyes. In fact, Randy Travis said as much in a song with this title: "I can see it your eyes /They're the windows to your soul".
He is not alone in finding the image useful. Men at Work recorded a song with the same title, in which the singer can see that he has been deceived, and the relationship is over. In the Lionel Richie song 'Hello', the singer is sure that what he sees in the eyes is the partner he has been looking for.
7. Why Sky
Answer: Wise guy
A wise guy is someone who makes insolent or impudent comments. They might also be called a smart alec or a weisenheimer.
When written as a single word, wiseguy, it is usually a reference to a member of a criminal gang.
8. Bat Chill Harp Hearty
Answer: Bachelor party
A bachelor party is a celebration held shortly before a man is about to be married, in which he celebrates with his closest male friends. It has been traditionally seen as a "farewell to freedom" in the transition from bachelorhood to marriage. Bachelor parties tend to involve the ingestion of copious amounts of intoxicants (with predictable results), and have been the subject of numerous comedic movies.
9. Hore Sand Bug Ghee
Answer: Horse and buggy
The phrase horse and buggy refers to a mode of transport in which people sit in a four-wheeled vehicle (buggy) which is pulled by a horse. It has come to be used to refer to any concept or institution which the speaker believes to be as outdated as the horse-drawn carriage.
10. Abe Hoe Lush Hooker
Answer: A bowl of sugar
Once upon a time sugar was supplied in solid blocks, from which the user would cut off the desired amount using a knife or a specially-designed sugar axe. The vestiges of this can be seen in the sugar cube. More commonly, however, sugar is sold and stored in the form of separate crystals, which need to be kept in a container.
While it might be stored in a large container called a canister, it is more usual to have a smaller container, a sugar bowl, in which to present sugar for communal use at a dinner table or when offering coffee or tea.
