Nikita Khrushchev was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1964. His leadership was a mixed bag of offering more freedoms in some areas, easing travel restrictions and allowing more expression in the arts, while clamping down down in other areas.

For example, he closed down religious institutions and forbade parents from teaching religion to their children. Internationally he was known for his involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1964 he was forced out of his position and lived the rest of his life in relative obscurity.

He was known for his flamboyance and excess. The singer, actor and pianist had a career in television, movies and was a Las Vegas headliner for over 40 years. He died in 1987 at the age of 67.

In 1962 John and some friends began the band "Bluesology". About five years later he changed his name to Elton John in honor of two members of "Bluesology", Elton Dean and John Baldry. In 1972 he legally changed his name to Elton Hercules John.
