Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Link the words together, so the last three letters of a word become the first three letters of the next word. The first and last words have a common link. What is the intentional killing of a person?

Answer: Murder

Murder has several definitions, the first and most being the crime of a premeditated and unlawful killing of another person. It was a gruesome way of life in ancient times, and is now a favourite plot of many movies and books, like Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Links".
A murder is also the collective noun for a group of crows, a very fitting name especially during breeding season. A very difficult and tedious task can also be described as murder ('this homework is murder') as can a fit of anger ('my Dad will murder me if I scratch his car').
"Murder on the Links" is an Agatha Christie crime novel released in 1923.
2. Beginning with the last three letters of the previous answer, what is a short-barreled type of large calibre pocket pistol?

Answer: Derringer

The last word was 'Murder', so this word must begin with 'DER'.

A derringer is a small handgun originally designed and made by Henry Deringer (1786-1868). The gun is now spelt with a double 'R' due to a misspelling in a press report about the Lincoln assassination by John Wilkes Booth.
3. Beginning with the last three letters of the previous answer, what is a type of burrowing rodent found in Asia and Africa?

Answer: Gerbil

The last word was 'Derringer', so this word must begin with 'GER'.

A gerbil is a rodent with large hind feet and proportionately large ears and eyes. Living predominately in the desert regions of Africa, India and Asia, they have become popular as pets.
4. Beginning with the last three letters of the previous answer, what is an adjective for something divided into two cells?

Answer: Bilocular

The last word was 'Gerbil', so this word must begin with 'BIL'.
A biological term, bilocular means having two cells or chambers. A walnut has a type of bilocular pericarp, the flesh of the nut is in two distinct halves. Tomatoes are bi or even trilocular. Some flowers have a bilocular capsule within which the seeds develop.

It is similar to, but different from, a bilobular organ, like the left lung or the thyroid gland, which has two distinct lobes.
5. Beginning with the last three letters of the previous answer, name a type of delphinium flower, or a Californian city.

Answer: Larkspur

The last word was 'bilocular', so this word must begin with 'LAR'.

The Larkspur, Consolida ajacis, is an annual flower similar to a delphinium. The flowers come in a range of colours from blues and purples to pinks and reds. They are easy to grow, not requiring much maintenance, however they do not like humid heat.
6. Beginning with the last three letters of the previous answer, what is a colour related to violet and mauve?

Answer: Purple

The last word was 'Larkspur', so this word must begin with 'PUR'.

Purple is a colour in the light spectrum between red and blue. In painting and the red, yellow and blue primary colours, purple is made by mixing red and blue. Different shades are made by altering the ratios of red and blue, or adding white (for a lighter shade) and black (for darker). Using the CMYK colour models in computing and printing, purple is made by mixing red with cyan or black, or a combination of both.
7. Beginning with the last three letters of the previous answer, what is a synonym for copious or abundant?

Answer: Plentiful

The last word was 'Purple', so this word must begin with 'PLE'.

If something is described as being plentiful, it is available in copious amounts without being excessive. It is often applied to crops- 'the apples are plentiful this year'. Plentiful is a greater quantity than ample.
8. Beginning with the last three letters of the previous answer, describe something (usually a disease) that occurs suddenly, and with great intensity.

Answer: Fulminant

The last word was 'Plentiful', so this word must begin with 'FUL'.

A fulminant disease onset is one that manifests suddenly and worsens quickly. A case of fulminant hepatitis, for example, is a severe liver failure that develops over a matter of weeks in a previously well person.
9. Beginning with the last three letters of the previous answer, what is the pollen-bearing part of a flower?

Answer: Anther

The last word was 'Fulminant', so this word must begin with 'ANT'.

The most obvious anthers are the ones on lilies, that grow long and are covered in a brownish pollen that then falls off. If the lilies are in a vase without the anthers being removed, the pollen falls onto the furniture and can stain wooden and fabric furnishings.
10. Beginning with the last three letters of the previous answer, give me the first name of Agatha Christie's Poirot.

Answer: Hercule

The last word was 'Anther', so this word must begin with HER''.

Hercule Poirot was Christie's Belgian detective, whose first appearance was in "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" (1920). He was described as a short, fastidious man, possibly with a touch of obsessive-compulsiveness. He is always neat, takes pride in his patent leather shoes, is punctual to a fault and prefers his bank account to sit at 444 pounds, four shillings and four pence. Poirot's last appearance was in "Curtain: Poirot's Last Case" (1975).
