Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gemma Ward

Born in Perth, Western Australia, in 1987, Gemma is widely considered to be a supermodel. Ward was identified at an early age and made her debut at the Australian Fashion Week at the tender age of 15 years. It did not take long for her to appear on the cover of the American edition of Vogue magazine and she was, at that time, the youngest to do so. Vogue in Paris also rated her highly, placing her in their list of the Top 30 Models of 2000s.

Ward took to acting with relative ease. Initially, she appeared in "The Black Balloon", a 2008 Australian drama about a family dealing with autism, before making an appearance in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" in 2011. She had a brief relationship with fellow West Australian Heath Ledger. Meeting the actor in New York in November of 2007, the pair spent Christmas together that year but Ledger would pass away less than a month later. Gemma has been a partner to David Letts with whom she has had three children.
2. Anthony LaPaglia

Born in 1959 in South Australia's capital city, Adelaide, LaPaglia's first love was soccer. And he was no mug either, playing as a goalkeeper for both Adelaide City and West Adelaide in Australia's National Soccer League before setting his sights on an acting career.

He starred as Jack Malone in the television crime drama series "Without a Trace" (2002-09), winning a Golden Globe for his performances during the 2004 season. He would also earn a PrimeTime Emmy for his role as Simon Moon on the sitcom "Frasier", where he appeared between 2000 and 2004.

Anthony would show his versatility by winning three AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) Awards, two as the leading actor - "Lantana" (2001) and "Balibo" (2009), and the third for his supporting role as Nitram's father in "Nitram" (2021). On stage, he collected a Tony for his work in the 1997 Broadway revival of Arthur Miller's "A View from the Bridge".

To this point Anthony has been married three times - Cherie Michan, Gia Carides and, since 2018, to Alexandria Henkel. He has a daughter, Bridget, with Carides and he is the godfather to both Poppy Montgomery and Jackson Kaufman.
3. Cadel Evans

Cadel Evans, whose heritage is in Wales, was named after three of the Welsh Kings and was born in the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory. Evans' early cycling career was devoted to mountain biking, winning the Mountain Bike World Cup in successive years (1998/99) and placing seventh during the men's cross-country mountain bike event at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney.

The following year, Cadel turned his attention to road cycling, eventually earning a place on a team to contest the Tour de France. He finished second in the event in 2007 and 2008 with both of those being cited as two of the closest finishes in the Tour's history. Success finally arrived in 2011 when he became the first Australian and, only, the third non-European to win the Tour.

In 2015 he began a relationship with Stefania Zandonella, with whom he has a son, Aiden.
4. Margot Robbie

Born in the small rural centre of Dalby (population 12,700 in 2021) in Queensland, Margot Robbie has grown to become one of Australia's most prominent actresses, and was named as one of the "100 Most Influential People of 2017" by Time magazine.

She began her acting career playing the role of Donna Freedman in the Australian soap opera "Neighbours" between 2008 and 2011. Moving to the United States she came into prominence in Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" (2013), solidifying her position three years later, playing Jane Porter in "The Legend of Tarzan" and Harley Quinn in "Suicide Squad".

Since then she has accumulated three Academy Award nominations, a swag of BAFTA (British Academy Film Awards) nominations, and a Golden Globe. Her first Oscar nomination came for her portrayal of Tonya Harding in "I, Tonya" (2017). A Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination followed for her work in "Bombshell" (2019) and, as a producer, she earned a Best Picture nomination from the Academy for the 2023 comedy "Barbie".

5. Hugh Jackman

Sydney (New South Wales) born Hugh Jackman is one of the world's most versatile actors, starring in roles that range from drama to period pieces, science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, action-horror, musicals, and romantic comedies.

He has received a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for his role as Jean Valjean in 2012's "Les Miserables", collected a PrimeTime Emmy in 2005 for his work at the "The 58th Annual Tony Awards", won a Grammy Award for the soundtrack to "The Greatest Showman" (2017), and two Tony Awards - one for his portrayal of Peter Allen in the Broadway production of "The Boy from Oz" (2003), and the other one being an honorary award.

Hugh married Deborah-Lee Furness in 1996. The pair have two adopted children, but announced their separation in January 2025. Jackman was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2019.
6. Sigrid Thornton

Sigrid Thornton, born in Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), has done more service to Australia's film industry than simply being an actress within it. She has been appointed onto various boards of numerous state and federal film bodies, has been a constant lobbyist to successive governments to maintain libraries so that they can continue to provide resources to the country's film, and television industries and has been a guiding light to many up and coming actors.

She has featured prominently on Australian television in such series as "Prisoner" (1979-80), "All the Rivers Run" in 1983 with John Waters, "Sea Change" (1998-2019) and "Wentworth" (2016-19). In the United States she starred in television western series "Paradise" (1988-91) and has appeared in the films "Snapshot" (1978) and "The Man From Snowy River" (1982), among others.

Married to actor Tom Burstall, she has two children and has committed an enormous amount of time in promoting various charitable causes.
7. Kylie Minogue

Dubbed the "Princess of Pop", Kylie Minogue was born in the capital city of Victoria, Melbourne, in 1968. Though she has made her mark in the music industry, her first brush with fame arrived when she won the role of the no-nonsense Charlene Robinson in the Australian television soap opera "Neighbours", a role she enjoyed between 1986 and 1988.

She released her first single, a cover of the Little Eva hit "The Loco-Motion", in 1987, which began a run of several dance orientated pop singles that topped the Australian charts. This provided her with a platform to launch herself upon the UK market where she also dominated. Her international breakthrough came with the release of the 2001 LP "Fever". The album featured the single "Can't Get You Out of My Head", which topped many charts across the globe and proved to be one of the best selling singles of that decade.

By 2024 Kylie had sold in excess of 80 million records, making her the highest selling Australian female artist to that point. She also became the first female artist, in the UK charts, to have a chart-topping album and a Top Ten single, in five consecutive decades.

Kylie has had a number of high profile relationships over the years, commencing with her "Neighbours" co-star, Jason Donovan (1986-89), Olivier Martinez till 2007, and was engaged to Joshua Sasse till 2017 before commencing a five year relationship with GQ executive Paul Solomons. That ended in 2023.
8. Errol Flynn

Errol was born in 1909 in Battery Park, a suburb of Hobart in Tasmania. He made headlines, both for his hedonistic lifestyle and the swashbuckling roles that he portrayed on the screen during, what became known as, Hollywood's "Golden Age" of film. Best known for his role as Robin Hood in "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938), he also starred as "Captain Blood" (1935), and had the lead role in "The Charge of the Light Brigade" (1936).

The well known expression "in like Flynn" was said to have been born from the ease with which Flynn was, reputedly, able to seduce women. His womanizing made headlines, as did his addictions to alcohol, cigarettes and sex. There were reports of frequent partnerships with Olivia de Havilland, that commenced when the pair worked together on "Robin Hood". Olivia confirmed that there was a chemistry and strong feelings between the pair but that the relationship was never consummated. Errol was married three times to Lili Damita (1935-42), Nora Eddington (1943-49), and Patrice Wymore from 1950 until his passing in 1959. He had a son and three daughters through those unions.
9. Russell Crowe

Born in 1964 in Wellington on New Zealand's north island, Russell spent a number of his formative years in Australia, becoming a permanent resident of that country when he turned twenty-one. His breakout role was that of Hando in the Australian drama "Romper Stomper" (1992), which opened doors for him in the United States. Roles in "L.A. Confidential" (1997) and "The Insider" (1999), brought him international recognition, but it was his role of Maximus Meridius in 2000's "Gladiator" that earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor and shot him to super-stardom. Other notable roles include that of the real-life mathematician John Nash in "A Beautiful Mind" (2001), the boxer Jim Braddock in "Cinderella Man" (2005), and the legendary "Robin Hood" (2010).

Crowe married Australian singer Danielle Spencer in April of 2003 after meeting her while working together on "The Crossing" way back in 1990. The pair divorced in 2018. An avid follower of rugby, Crowe was, at one time, the owner of the Australian National Rugby League team the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
10. Ben Stokes

Here's one that got away from New Zealand. The son of rugby league player Gerard Stokes, Ben was born in Christchurch, on New Zealand's South Island in 1991, and it is believed that there is some Maori ancestry within his line. The family moved to England when Ben was twelve years old.

Ben's cricket skills appeared early and, in 2011, he was selected to make his debut for England in the two short forms of the game, T20 and One Day Internationals. He would make his Test match debut two years later. A gifted all-rounder, which means he is a weapon with both the ball and the bat, he was named Wisden's Leading World Cricketer in 2019, 2020, and in 2022. In April of 2022 he was appointed captain of the English Test team, and he was a vital member of the English team that would win the 2022 T20 World Cup.

In 2017 he married Clare Ratcliffe, and the pair have two children. Ben also sports a large tattoo of a family of lions across his back that, he says, symbolizes his family.
