WBCN hosted a lot of big-name bands and often broadcast live from many local concerts. Seeing WBCN's bright yellow GMC van, affectionately named "Wicked Too" at any show was a common site and a great place to grab station bumper stickers and swag.
2. What was the first rock song played on WBCN?

Answer: "I Feel Free" by Cream

On March 15, 1968, DJ Joe Rogers played the 1966 release "I Feel Free" by Cream as the first rock song when WBCN shifted from classical music to progressive rock. The rest is rock and roll history.

Peter Wolf had a popular late night radio show where he interviewed many touring artists for much of the 1960s. He left WBCN to focus his time on the newly-formed band he was in, the J. Geils Band

The WBCN unionized staff went on strike for three weeks in 1979 after the radio stations new owners (Hemisphere Communications) fired a lot of the long-time workers, including the news director Danny Shecter and Oedipus, a very popular DJ. They called all of the firings "the massacre" but in the end, they were all rehired.

Oedipus was a pink-haired music director and DJ that was also known for creating one of the first punk rock radio shows in America. He was the first DJ to repeatedly play the Police song "Roxanne".

Answer: "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd

On August 11, 2009, DJ Bradley Jay signed off, ending his 27-years with the station and closing the final chapter of WBCN by playing the Pink Floyd tune. He chose "I Feel Free" by Cream as his second-to-last song (which was the first rock song played on WBCN on March 15, 1968).
