Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Sorting Hat

To avoid repetition, the various book titles are abbreviated. For example, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" is shortened to "the Philosopher's Stone". Using this shorthand, the American edition of that book is "the Sorcerer's Stone".

When Harry makes it to Hogwarts as a first-year student, one of the first formal procedures he participates in is the Sorting Ceremony, which is described in Chapter 7 of "the Philosopher's Stone" (1997). The magical Sorting Hat is placed on each new student's head in turn whereupon the Hat announces the school house to which the student is allocated. The decision is based on the student's character as assessed by the Sorting Hat. In Harry's case, it seems that he would have suited Slytherin or Gryffindor and, when Harry whispered: "Not Slytherin", the Hat listened to him.
2. The Golden Snitch

Still with "the Philosopher's Stone", Harry meets the Golden Snitch for the first time in Chapter 10 during an introductory session with his Quidditch team captain Oliver Wood. Earlier, during a flying lesson, his flying talent had been spotted by Professor McGonagall who soon placed him into Wood's hands. Harry's position in the team is that of Seeker, whose task during a game is to catch the Golden Snitch. Catching the Golden Snitch ends the game, with victory nearly always going to the side that catches it due to the large number of points earned.
3. T M Riddle's diary

The diary comes into Harry's possession during Chapter 13 of "the Chamber of Secrets" (1998). Hermione is in hospital with a furry face as a result of a Polyjuice accident and there are mysterious attacks happening. Ron and Harry overhear Filch complaining about water in the corridor outside Moaning Myrtle's bathroom.

It is here that Harry picks up the diary. It is later revealed that the author's full name is 'Tom Marvolo Riddle' which is an anagram for 'I am Lord Voldemort'. The diary also turns out to be a Horcrux created by Voldemort.
4. The Sword of Gryffindor

In Chapter 17 of "the Chamber of Secrets", Harry is in the chamber with an unconscious Ginny Weasley and a manifestation of Tom Riddle who is set on killing Harry. Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix, arrives at one point clutching the Sorting Hat. It turns out that in his time of need, the Hat delivers the Sword of Gryffindor to Harry. Harry is then able to deal with the Basilisk that Tom Riddle has loosed on him. Almost as an afterthought, Harry plunges a Basilisk tooth into the diary which kills off the Tom Riddle facsimile.

It is only later that we learn that the diary was a Horcrux.
5. Marauder's Map

It is Fred and George Weasley who supply Harry with the Marauder's Map in Chapter 10 of "the Prisoner of Azkaban" (1999). They give it to him initially so he could get to Hogsmeade using a secret passage. Without parental permission, Harry had been unable to go into Hogsmeade with other students of his year. With the Marauder's Map and the Invisibility Cloak, Harry now had the means to join his friends as well as get up to mischief.
6. The Time-Turner

Hermione has been using a Time-Turner all year to attend extra classes. In Chapter 12 of "the Prisoner of Azkaban", she is basically told by Dumbledore to use it along with Harry to rescue Sirius Black. Going three hours back in time, they are able to rescue Buckbeak, Hagrid's Hippogriff which is under sentence of death, and then rescue Sirius and provide him with a means of escape, namely Buckbeak.

They achieve this and just manage to return to the hospital wing in time.
7. Gillyweed

Despite being underage, Harry is entered into and accepted for the Triwizard Contest without his knowledge in "the Goblet of Fire" (2000). After surviving the first task, he needs Cedric's hint to take a bath with the golden egg and Moaning Myrtle's hint to listen to the message with his head underwater.

It is however Dobby who, in Chapter 26, tells Harry about gillyweed and supplies it to him. This is what allows Harry to spend an hour or so underwater so that he can complete the second task and rescue his own 'hostage' as well as Fleur's (Ron and Gabrielle).

The film version has Neville Longbottom supply the gillyweed.
8. Prophecy Orb

It was all a trap. For some time Harry has been having visions of Sirius in deadly trouble. Eventually Harry convinces his friends to launch a rescue mission to the Ministry of Magic. In Chapter 34 of "the Order of the Phoenix" (2003), they succeed in getting to the right location at the end of row 97 but find no Sirius. Surrounded by shelves of glass orbs, Ron spots one with Harry's name on it.

This is the prophecy orb that Voldemort wants and is the reason why Harry has been having the visions. Picking it up coincides with the arrival of a bunch of Death Eaters who wish to recover it for their master.
9. Half-blood Prince's potions book

With the release of the O.W.L. exam results, Harry and friends are allocated their N.E.W.T. subjects in Chapter 9 of "The Half-Blood Prince" (2005). Harry was not expecting to be allowed to take Potions and so had not got any of the required texts or equipment.

At the first Potions lesson Professor Slughorn gives Harry a battered copy of 'Advanced Potion-Making' by Libatius Borage. It turns out to be an annotated version once owned by the Half-Blood Prince. The annotations prove to be accurate, resulting in Harry winning a small bottle of Felix Felicis (or 'liquid luck').

The Half-Blood Prince turns out to be Professor Snape.
10. The Resurrection Stone

Chapter 7 of "the Deathly Hallows" (2007) starts as Harry turns seventeen. A party at the Weasleys' home is being prepared when the Minister for Magic Rufus Scrimgeour arrives. It turns out that he is carrying out the instructions left in Albus Dumbledore's Will, somewhat reluctantly as he is suspicious that there is more to the bequests than appears at first sight. Harry receives the Golden Snitch he caught in his first Quidditch match and, although he doesn't know it at the time, the Resurrection Stone.

It is only in Chapter 34 that Harry opens the Snitch and the Resurrection Stone is revealed. He is about to face Voldemort and is expecting to die. The Stone is one of the three Deathly Hallows referred to in the 'Tale of the Three Brothers' in Chapter 21.
