My students really love photo quizzes and word scrambles, and this photo match quiz brings those two things together! Match the scrambled English words to their correct photos. (Click the images for a closer look!)
The scrambled clue "cakj-o-ntlenra" = jack-o-lantern.
A jack-o'-lantern is a pumpkin that has been carved with a face and lit from the inside. People often use candles or small lights to make the face glow. This tradition began in Ireland, where people carved turnips or potatoes to scare away evil spirits. When Irish immigrants came to America, they started using pumpkins instead because they were easier to carve.
Fascinating fact: The name "jack-o'-lantern" comes from an old Irish legend about a man named Stingy Jack, who tricked the devil and was cursed to roam the earth with only a carved-out turnip to light his way.
2. cablk act
The scrambled clue "cablk act" = black cat.
Black cats became symbols of mystery because of old superstitions. In medieval Europe, people believed these cats were connected to witches, either as companions or even witches in disguise. That idea stuck over time, and now black cats are often seen as spooky decorations.
Fascinating fact: In some cultures, like in Japan, black cats are actually seen as good luck, not bad luck!
3. tegrensova
The scrambled clue "tegrensova" = gravestone.
Gravestones are used as decorations to create a haunted setting during Halloween. The connection comes from the holiday's early focus on death and the spirit world. Long ago, people believed spirits could return on Halloween night, which is why gravestones became part of the theme.

4. edrpsi ewb
The scrambled clue "edrpsi ewb" = spider web.
Because they make places look old and abandoned, spider webs are often used as Halloween decorations. Spiders and their webs have long been linked to fear, dark corners, and mystery.

5. ccheolaot
The scrambled clue "ccheolaot" = chocolate.
Chocolate became a popular Halloween treat when trick-or-treating grew in the 1950s. Candy companies began making small, wrapped chocolates that were easy to hand out to kids going door-to-door. Today, it is one of the most common treats people give out on Halloween.
Fascinating fact: The first solid chocolate bar was created in the 1800s by the British chocolate company, Cadbury.
6. dnlouarc
The scrambled clue "dnlouarc" = cauldron.
A cauldron, which is basically just a large cooking pot, is often shown bubbling in stories about witches. This image comes from old folklore, where witches used cauldrons to mix potions and cast spells. Because of that, cauldrons became a well-known Halloween symbol.
Fascinating fact: A version of the story in which a cauldron can create endless food or double your things can be found in many different cultures.
7. larmaec plape
The scrambled clue "larmaec plape" = caramel apple.
Caramel apples are made by dipping fresh apples into melted caramel. They became popular around Halloween because apples are harvested in the fall. Since Halloween is a fall holiday, people began making this sweet treat for parties and celebrations.
Fascinating fact: Caramel apples were invented in the 1950s when a candy maker tried experimenting by melting down leftover Halloween caramels and dipping apples into them.
8. tsbkcomoir
The scrambled clue "tsbkcomoir" = broomstick.
The broomstick is shown as the way witches fly through the night sky. This idea comes from old European stories where people believed witches used broomsticks to travel and perform magic.

9. oelteksn
The scrambled clue "oelteksn" = skeleton.
Skeletons are used as Halloween decorations to represent death and the afterlife. Their appearance helps create a creepy or haunted feeling at parties and events.

10. yadcn ronc
The scrambled clue "yadcn ronc" = candy corn.
Candy corn, shaped like small pieces of corn, has three layers of color: yellow, orange, and white. It has been around since the 1800s and became connected to Halloween because it celebrates the fall harvest.
