Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which organization is known as WHO?

Answer: World Health Organization

The World Health Organization, an agency of the United Nations, was founded in 1948. Its goal is to help achieve the highest level of health possible for all people around the world. In January 2021, the group consisted of 194 member states and two associate members and had 150 field offices worldwide.
2. Which is the correct spelling of the term that means "one who defends"?

Answer: Advocate

The word advocate is derived from the Latin "ad", meaning to and "vocare", which means to call. In Roman law, an advocatus was a person who was called to assist someone as a witness or plead a case on their behalf. By the mid-1300s, an advocate was a person, such as a barrister, who would plead cases in a court of justice.
3. What is the translation into English of the Afrikaans word, "aardvark"?

Answer: Earth pig

While an aardvark has a snout that resembles one of a pig, the two animals are not closely related. Aardvarks have sharp claws for digging and a long sticky tongue. This combination of physical features enables them to dig up termite mounds or ant hills to find their supper, as they are typically nocturnal animals. Found in sub-Saharan Africa, they also use their claws to dig burrows, their homes, and can dig a hole in about ten minutes if they feel threatened by a predator.
4. What name did Jean Piaget, a pioneer in the study of cognitive development, give to the first stage of human development?

Answer: Sensorimotor

The sensorimotor stage takes place between the ages of 0-2. Because babies are born with no prior knowledge of the world, they must learn about their surroundings by use of their reflexes and senses. This means that they have quite a busy first two years! The most important development at this stage is what Piaget called object permanence, the idea that an object does not cease to exist just because one cannot see it.
5. In which ancient city can tourists visit the House of the Vettii?

Answer: Pompeii

While it is true that the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD completely destroyed the ancient city of Pompeii, the ashes also helped to preserve the ruins. The original owners of the estate appear to have been Aulus Vettius Conviva and Aulus Vettius Restitutus, who some historians believe had been emancipated slaves.

It seems that the two had just finished redecorating their home with lovely frescoes after an earthquake in 62 AD. These frescoes are well preserved today and have retained their exquisite beauty.
6. At which location in Colorado, one visited by many musicians of the 1970s, did the band Chicago record "Chicago VI" in 1973?

Answer: Caribou Ranch

The Caribou Ranch, located near Nederland, Colorado, was a popular hangout for musicians, such as Chicago, Dad Fogelberg, Carole King, and even Elton John in the 1970s-1980s. The recording studio complex, which began in a barn, was built by James Guercio in 1972, who produced several albums for Chicago, including "Chicago VI" (1973), which contained the hits, "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" and "Just You 'n' Me".

In 1985, the studio was closed after the control room was destroyed by fire. Guercio sold most of the property in 2001, and today a portion of it is enjoyed as a conservation area.
7. In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", who put Harry's name in the goblet?

Answer: Barty

Spoiler Alert!

Many of the students believed that Harry had submitted his own name, in spite of the fact that the rules were very strict - each school was to have only one champion, who was to be a certain age. No one, however, was more surprised than Harry when the goblet also threw out his name after the others had been chosen. The culprit turned out to be Barty Crouch Jr., who was holding Professor Moody captive and using polyjuice potion to look like him.
8. Who guest starred in "The Big Bang Theory", Season 6/Episode22, "The Proton Resurgence" (2013)?

Answer: Bob Newhart

Bob Newhart was Arthur Jeffrey, who starred as Professor Proton, the host of a science program for kids when Sheldon and Leonard were growing up. Although he had a PhD in science from Cornell University, Arthur had trouble with people viewing him as a serious scientist, and he had fallen upon some hard times. Leonard and Sheldon had hired him to come to their apartment and perform the routine that he offered for entertainment at children's birthday parties.

Professor Proton appeared in six episodes of the program from 2013-2018, even appearing after his death to give Sheldon advice when necessary. Bob Newhart earned a Prime Time Emmy for the role in 2013.
9. Oh, my! I hope you don't get this one wrong. Then you might suffer from katagelophobia, the fear of which of the following?

Answer: Embarrassment

Most people fear embarrassment to some degree, however, a person who suffers from katagelophobia is so afraid of being embarrassed that they are unable to pursue normal daily activities. While some people can laugh off humiliating experiences, others become traumatized by them. Parents need to remember this as their children are growing up and facing the challenges of learning how to conform to society.

A bit of kindness and understanding can go a long way in preventing the fear of embarrassment.
10. Which team won the NBA 2001 Finals?

Answer: L. A. Lakers

In the 2001 NBA Championship Finals, the Los Angeles Lakers battled against the Philadelphia 76ers, ultimately winning the series 4-1 in the best of seven format. While the Lakers lost the first game in the series, they ultimately won the next four in a row, earning them their second straight NBA Championships. Shaquille O'Neal was chosen as the series MVP.
