Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Only being allowed eight records on my desert island, it is so very hard to choose which ones to take. I had to take my favourite Roy Orbison song with me, and these are some of the lyrics to it. Which song is it? "I love you And I'm dreaming of you A-that won't do"

Answer: Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)

"Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)" was a number four hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962. It reached number two on the UK singles chart the same year.

Roy Kelton Orbison was born in Vernon, Texas, USA, in 1936. He became one of the most popular singers of the '60s. His one hit record of the '50s was "Ooby Dooby" with the Teen Kings which reached number 59 on the Billboard singles chart in 1956. Along with many other singers from the '50s & '60s his chart career went into decline in the '70s. He made a comeback in the '80s as a member of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. The group consisted of Bob Dylan (Lucky), George Harrison (Nelson), Jeff Lynne (Otis), Roy Orbison (Lefty) and Tom Petty (Charlie T. Junior).

Roy Orbison died of a heart attack in 1988 aged 52. He had a posthumous hit with "You Got It" which reached number nine on the Billboard singles chart in 1989. It reached number three on the UK singles chart the same year. The song was written by Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty.

2. One beautiful piece of music I would take with me to a desert island is a song written by Billy Ray Cyrus in tribute to veterans of all US wars. What's the name of the song?

Answer: Some Gave All

"Some Gave All" was also used during the two-part episode of the TV series "Doc". In between scenes of the show, war veterans and firefighters were interviewed about their experiences, whether it was a war or working at "Ground Zero" in New York City. Most veterans were from WWII or Vietnam. One veteran served in three wars - WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The song is sung at the end of part two and will definitely bring tears to your eyes! My deepest gratitude to all of these heroes!

3. One of the recordings I would take with me if I were stranded on a deserted island would be "I Just Called to Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder. What is the name of the movie that featured this song?

Answer: The Woman in Red

Stevie Wonder wrote and produced the entire music score for "The Woman in Red" (1984). "I Just Called to Say I Love You" was a number one hit for Wonder on the US Billboard Hot 100, the UK Singles Chart, and also reached number one in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Norway, France, Austria and Denmark.

The song won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and was nominated for three Grammy Awards.

Stevie Wonder also wrote songs for the three movies in the incorrect answers.

4. One piece of music I would take to a desert island is somewhat unusual and not really a song in the conventional sense. The melodies are being warbled by Anthornnis melanura, Turdus merula, Turdus philomelos and Callaeas wilsoni. What will I be listening to on my desert island?

Answer: Song birds

Because I am that strange and unusual creature, a human who positively dislikes 99% of all music, being forced to listen to it on a desert island would send me bonkers, bananas , crazy, cracked and cuckoo. But birdsong is wonderful: soothing, relaxing and just plain beautiful.

Anthornnis melanura is the Bellbird of New Zealand, which has one of the most beautiful of all birdsongs. Turdus merula and Turdus philomelos are the Blackbird and Song Thrush respectively; found in the UK originally but brought to New Zealand by pioneer Victorians who were homesick for their melodious songs. The Kokako, also called Callaeas wilsoni, is another enchanting bird with a lovely, liquid trilling call.

5. One of the songs I would take with me to a desert island is on the Beatles album "Revolver" released in 1966. This track opens the album and features lead vocals by George Harrison. Which Beatles song am I taking to the island?

Answer: Taxman

This track is the first Beatles track I ever heard that I truly loved. I had mistakenly thought most of their music could be classified as "bubblegum". The radio station I heard it on played it on April 15 (income tax day in the USA).

"Revolver" was follow-up to the album "Rubber Soul" and precursor to the album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is on "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", and "Drive My Car" is on "Rubber Soul". Neither are sung by George Harrison. "Do You Want To Know A Secret" is sung by Harrison, but is on 1963 album "Please Please Me", not "Revolver".

6. I'm taking a song by blues harmonica player/singer Aleck "Sonny Boy Williamson" Miller. In the song he says he isn't going to fatten any more of a certain animal for another certain animal. The former animal is a member of the lissamphibia subclass, whereas the latter is a type of squamata. What's the name of the song? "Fattening ________ For __________".

Answer: Fattening Frogs For Snakes

Apparently "Fattening Frogs For Snakes" is about wining and dining young ladies in the hope of some amorous payback only to get usurped by a younger pretender. In the song, Sonny Boy bemoans his mistakes and pledges not to get caught out again by saying:

"I found out my downfall, from nineteen and thirty,
I'm tellin' all of my friends,
I'm not fattenin' no more frogs for snakes...

Whoa man, nineteen and fifty-seven,
I've got to correct all of my mistakes,
I'm tellin' my friends includin' my wife and everybody else,
not fattenin' no more frogs for snakes".

The track, recorded with the formidable Willie Dixon on bass, was released as a single in 1957 on the Checker label.

In the 1960s, Sonny Boy Williams was one of many American blues artists courted by English bands who were greatly influenced by the blues, and he was invited to record and tour with upcoming stars such as The Yardbirds. Like many of the old-hands, Sonny was less than impressed with the English upstarts grasp of the genre and was quoted as saying "those British boys want to play the blues real bad, and they do". Classic.

7. One record I would definitely take to a desert island is this Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman hit from 1996. It is one of those rare songs that stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it and I have loved it ever since. Which song am I talking about?

Answer: Time to Say Goodbye

Andrea Bocelli is arguably the most sucessful solo classical artist in the world with his records selling over 80 million copies. He became blind at the age of 12 after he was hurt in a football game.

Sarah Brightman started as a dancer in Hot Gossip. She used to be married to Andrew Lloyd Webber and has been named by Billboard as being in the top five of best-selling classical artists.

8. The book I would take to a desert island is a novel by John Steinbeck centered on the lives of the Trask and Hamilton families. What's the name of the book?

Answer: East of Eden

American Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck published "East of Eden" in 1952. Steinbeck considered this his magnum opus, and I agree! In 1981, there was an American TV miniseries based on it. After having seen that, I wanted to read the book (which of course was much better). Since then I must have read the book about every two years. It is quite long (55 chapters), but if you have the time to read it, you will think your time well spent.

All of the choices are Steinbeck novels.

9. My desert island luxury item would be useful in many ways other than its original use as a thermal insulator. It might work as a shade from the sun, or to make lying on the beach more comfortable. I could even wave it to attract passing ships. When it all gets too much to handle, you can just crawl beneath it. What am I talking about?

Answer: A duvet

Duvets originated in northern Europe, and they are rated in warmth by togs. The name is French for "down", as in bird feathers. It was great when they became popular in the UK in the 1970s/1980s because they got rid of the tedious job of making beds with sheets, blankets and an eiderdown.

I love to snuggle into mine. It is nearly as good as cuddle!

A divan is a couch or bed and could not be waved at passing ships. A negligee is a sheer dressing gown, so could not be classed as a thermal insulator. A camisole is ladies underwear. It is a waist-length sleeveless top usually made in satin and would not provide either shade or warmth.

10. This American guest chose a recording of himself reciting the patriotic poem "America the Beautiful" when on Desert Island Discs in 1969. He made many recordings in his career, including voiceovers on Alice Cooper's "Welcome to My Nightmare" and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" although he was best-known as a horror actor in films such as "House of Wax" and "The Fly". Who am I talking about?

Answer: Vincent Price

The recording was from Vincent Price's 1961 spoken-word album "The Heart of America in Poetry" which also included "Paul Revere's Ride", "The Star-Spangled Banner", and "O Captain! My Captain!" amongst others.

Price recorded stuff ranging from "Witchcraft - Magic: An Adventure In Demonology" and "Tales Of Witches, Ghosts And Goblins" to "Wine Is Elegance", "International Cooking Course - Cucina Italiana" and a guide to the paintings in the Louvre! Actually, it's not as strange as it might first seem as Price was an Art History graduate and a gourmet chef. In fact, when English comedian John Cleese was on Desert Island Discs, he chose one of Vincent Price's cookery books as his reading matter.

Although Vincent Price's eccentric, macabre, and sometimes wildly theatrical performances were mesmerizing in themselves, some of the vehicles for his work lacked finance and thus finesse, which made some of his work come across as camp burlesque. Later in his career, he even appeared on The Muppet Show.

Both Christopher Lee and Claude Rains are known for appearing in horror films, but both were born in England, and didn't do the other things.

Orson Welles was American, but didn't do any of the things mentioned.
