Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ANIMALS. Which animal is sometimes nicknamed a "trash panda"?

Answer: raccoon

The raccoon (Procyon lotor) is informally called the "trash panda" in part for its habit of searching through trash cans as a possible source for food. The white and black fur around its face is similar to that of the giant panda. In addition the fur resembles a mask around the eyes.

The raccoon can be found across a wide variety of biomes in most of North America, where they are a familiar sight. The word raccoon means 'animal that scratches with its hands'.
2. BRAIN TEASERS. Find the synonym for junk hidden in the sentence below: Since it has been years since I visited a Renaissance Faire, I last wore my historical garb ages ago.

Answer: garbage

Since it has been years since I visited a Renaissance Faire, I last wore my historical GARB AGEs ago.

Ironically, the garb that one would wear to to a Renaissance Faire generally wouldn't be thought of as garbage or trash and in fact would have usually been rather expensive to purchase.

Garbage is used as a synonym for trash. "Garbage" originally referred to the entrails of animals. Interestingly, a study of garbage or trash provides a way for archaeologists learn about the past.
3. ENTERTAINMENT. Which radio series, written by Tony Bagley, aired on BBC Radio 4 from 2006 to 2007?

Answer: Rubbish

The series focused on Martin Christmas, who was an officer in a local sanitation department. Reece Dinsdale voiced the title character. Though Martin has a curmudgeonly character, many of those with whom he interacts on a daily basis are often rather unbalanced.
4. FOR CHILDREN. Which children's book series featured a visit to the Trash Tinies?

Answer: The Littles

"The Littles" was a series of children's books created by John Petersen in 1967. "The Littles and the Trash Tinies" was a 1977 addition to the series. The Littles are a group of tiny, mouse-like people who live in the walls of the home of the Bigg family. The Trash Tinies live in Trash City which was built and operates with materials found in a human junkyard.
5. GEOGRAPHY. The Berlin Wall (separating East Berlin from West Berlin) stood from 1961 to 1989. Which best describes the placement of graffiti on the wall during this time?

Answer: Graffiti on the West Berlin side, little on the East Berlin side

Propaganda by the East German government to the contrary, the purpose of the wall was to stop East German citizens from escaping to West Berlin rather than the reverse. Any attempt by the East German citizens to approach the wall too closely would provoke a strong reaction from the guards if noticed. By comparison, West Berliners would have been in little danger in approaching the wall.

The guards would have been hesitant in provoking an international incident over some minor vandalism.
6. LITERATURE. Which author had a supporting character in one of his or her novels known as Donald Elbert or the Trashcan Man?

Answer: Stephen King

The Trashcan Man appeared in Stephen King's novel "The Stand" where he was a follower of Randall Flagg, one of two leaders of competing groups of humans who have survived a plague that has eliminated most of the world's population. Donald or the Trashcan Man had several distinctive traits including a strong tendency to commit arson.

In filmed adaptations, the Trashcan Man has been portrayed by Matt Frewer and Ezra Miller.
7. MOVIES. Which staple of many horror films were encountered in the 2000 Japanese film "Junk"?

Answer: Zombies

Written and directed by Atsushi Muroga, "Junk" focuses on a group of thieves who are attempting to delivery a cargo of stolen goods to a rival gang. The thieves are forced to battle a group of zombie-like creatures who are the byproduct of dangerous experiments conducted by the military. The film received mixed reviews.
8. MUSIC. Which member of the band Garbage would be considered the primary vocalist?

Answer: Shirley Manson

Shirley Manson is the primary vocalist for Garbage, although she also plays the guitar and keyboards. Duke Erikson plays the guitar and keyboard. Steve Marker plays the guitar and bass. Butch Vig provides drums and percussion. The latter three do provide background vocals on some songs. Garbage released its seventh album "No Gods No Masters" in 2021.
9. VIDEO GAMES. In the video game "Trash", which disaster impacted earth?

Answer: Nuclear Fallout

A fleet of hostile alien spacecraft has entered Earth's orbit. The people of the Earth fight back by launching much of their nuclear arsenal at the ships. Though much of the fleet is destroyed, as the nuclear residue falls back towards Earth, a large amount of environmental damage ensues. "Trash" was developed by Inhuman Games and released on September 20, 2005 for play on Microsoft Windows.
10. WORLD. Which character found in public service messages would have most likely encouraged US television viewers in the 1970s and 1980s to not pollute?

Answer: Woodsy Owl

Woodsy Owl was created on behalf of the United States Forest Service in 1971. He was known for his tagline: "Give a hoot! Don't pollute!" He appeared in a number of television commercials as well as other products. By comparison, Smokey Bear tried to prevent forest fires (not specifically avoid pollution), McGruff the (Crime) Dog tried to work against crime, and Rubber Duckie was simply Ernie's friend.
