Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are many geological features in the United States. One of the more famous is the San Andreas Fault. In which US state is this located?

Answer: California

The San Andreas Fault is a right-lateral, strike-slip fault. Right-lateral means that the land opposite the fault moves right in relation to you. It extends from Punta Gorda near Cape Mendocino to the northern Gulf of California, a distance of over 800 miles. The fault acts as the plate boundary between the North American and Pacific plates, which are moving at approximately two inches per year.

The San Andreas fault was responsible for the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (magnitude 7.8), among many others. Due to the potential damage from another similar-sized earthquake, there is much speculation on where and when the next "big one" will strike.

3. If you were planning a vacation and wanted to see Hilo, Kona, and Niihau, where would you go?

Answer: Hawaii

Kona and Hilo are districts on the "Big Island" of Hawaii. Kona is famous for its coffee, which is regarded as some of the finest in the world. Hilo is a popular tourist destination, famous for whale watching. Even if you made it to Hawaii, you probably could not visit Niihau. Since 1864, this island has been owned by the same family.

It is a sort of sanctuary for native Hawaiian culture and tradition. There are only about 130 permanent inhabitants, and one must obtain special permission, which is rarely granted, to visit. Niihau is often called "The Forbidden Island."
