1. Athens

Athens is the capital city of Greece. It is a very old city with a recorded history dating back over 3400 years and as a city-state Athens was one of the most powerful entities in ancient Greece. While it was traditionally believed that the city was named after the ancient Greek goddess of Athena, modern research suggests that the goddess was actually named after the city.

There are many ancient monuments still visible in the city today including the famous Parthenon, a temple that was dedicated to the goddess Athena.
2. Rhodes

Rhodes is the main city on the island of the same name. The city was home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The citadel of Rhodes a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Europe. In modern times the city has become a popular tourist destination due to its history and its hot Mediterranean summers.
3. Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the capital of the administrative region of Central Macedonia in northern Greece. The city is named after Thessalonike, the daughter of Philip II of Macedon and wife of Cassander of Macedon who founded the city in 315BC. In modern times the city is known for its port which is one of the busiest in the Aegean Sea.
4. Patras

Patras is located in the Peloponnese, a peninsula connected to the rest of Greece by the Isthmus of Corinth land bridge. The city was established in ancient times and is the site of the martyrdom of the Christian Saint Andrew. Since 1829 the city has hosted the Patras Carnival, one of the largest in Europe, which takes place in February. Patras lies at the foot of Mount Panachaikon.
5. Heraklion

Heraklion is located on the Greek island of Crete and is the administrative capital of the island. The city is home to the ruins of Knossos Palace which dates from the second millennium BC and was a major centre for the Minoan civilization. The city has been known by a number of names over the years with the name Heraklion being an ancient name for the port serving the city Knossos.

As the island was conquered by various groups the name changed over the years but Heraklion was revived in the late 19th century following the removal of Ottoman rule.
6. Larissa

Larissa is the capital of the Thessaly region of Greece. The city is an important transport centre due to its road and rail links to the major cities of Thessaloniki and Athens and links to the port of Volos. In ancient Greece Larissa was a city-state. The city saw rapid growth following World War II to become one of the largest in Greece.
7. Chalcis

Chalcis is located on the Greek island of Euboea. The city dates back to ancient times and is mentioned in the epic poem the 'Iliad'. Chalcis lies across the Euripus Strait from the Greek mainland and the two are connected by bridges.
8. Alexandroupoli

Alexandroupoli lies in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace in Northern Greece. The city was established by the Ottoman Empire developing from a fishing village to a regional trading centre. The city came under Greek control following World War I when its name was changed to Alexandroupolis in honour of Alexander who was King of Greece at the time.
9. Corfu

Corfu is a city on the island of the same name located off the north west coast of the Greek mainland. The city, and island, was ruled by the republic of Venice from 1386 until 1797. The island was then ruled by various nations until it was ceded to Greece under the Treaty of London, signed in 1864.
10. Ioannina

Ioannina is the capital of the regional unit of the same name and located in north west Greece. The city is believed to have been founded by the Byzantine emperor Justinian and became part of the Ottoman Empire after their defeat of the Byzantine Empire. In 1913 the city became part of Greece following the Balkan Wars.
