Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Richardson led a division that broke through the Confederate center of the Sunken Road at Antietam.

Reynolds delayed the Rebels at Gettysburg on July 1st in the vicinity of the McPherson Farm long enough to gain vital high ground. Unfortunately, he was killed in the fighting. Doubleday assumed command of I Corps after Reynolds fell. Meade commanded the Union Army at Gettysburg, and his defensive mindset allowed for the formation of a "fish hook" line of defense that proved sturdy to Confederate attacks. Slocum commanded the Union right wing at Gettysburg, and provided crucial reinforcements that stemmed the Southern tide on July 2nd while holding on to the vital position at Culp's Hill. Hancock commanded the bulk of the Union defenses on July 2nd and 3rd. His skillful shifting of units to different positions and quick thinking resulted in the Union line holding firm.

McPherson led a major part of Sherman's army to within striking distance of Atlanta before he was killed in late July 1864. Sherman's capture of Atlanta sealed Lincoln's re-election in 1864. His March to the Sea deprived the Confederacy of vital supplies and the key port of Savannah, GA. He then drove north into the Carolinas to bring about the final major surrender of the war on April 26th. Howard was one of Sherman's key subordinates in the North Carolina campaign. Schofield won a crucial victory at Franklin, TN, in November 1864 to save the capital of Nashville from being captured, and removed the Confederate Army of Tennessee as a threat to Sherman's supply lines. Stanley, one of Schofield's subordinates, played a key role in halting the Rebel attack at Franklin.

Grant conducted the brutal Overland Campaign in Virginia, marked by horrific casualties and a series of battles before the penultimate Siege of Petersburg. He forced Lee to surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. About a month before the siege at Petersburg began, on May 10th, Upton attacked part of the Mule Shoe salient at Spotsylvania. Although driven back, his initial success encouraged Grant to plan a much larger assault on May 12th. Barlow's units helped break through at the Mule Shoe at Spotsylvania Court House on the 12th, and was instrumental in the victory at Sayler's Creek in April 1865. Wright, the commander of 6th Corps under Grant, was the architect of the breakthrough at Petersburg on April 2, 1865.
