Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This musical, as can probably be guessed by the title, is a humorous one. A well-known duo of merry prankster cartoonists created it. Who are they?

Answer: Trey Parker and Matt Stone

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the comedic geniuses behind "South Park", several movies and two amazing musicals. In fact, this musical was their very first project, save for a short film, "Jesus vs. Frosty".
2. As the musical opens, the main character is in jail and a reporter wants to get his story. She is told that he will not talk to her unless she brings up one topic. What? You can answer this question, of course, of course.

Answer: Liane - his horse

While the main character sits in jail, a female newspaper reporter comes in trying to get him to talk about his crimes. She has been told to ask him about what we all find out later is his horse who ran off with a fur trapper, abandoning him. The name of this horse, and the whole plot point in general of an unfaithful beast who runs off with another man, was directly inspired by Liane Adamo, Parker's, at that moment, freshly ex- girlfriend.
3. "Inspired" by the musical "Oklahoma!" the flashback that makes up most of the production opens with a song, "Shpadoinkle". Please, complete the first line, "The sky is blue and all the leaves are green. The sun's as warm as _____________." How does this line end?

Answer: a baked potato

I have to admit a whole lot of love for this crazy musical. I only discovered it years and years after its 1993 debut, but the catchy tunes, the crazy acting, the catchy tunes, the insane premise, and the catchy tunes make it seem like a much later and more mature work than it is in their oeuvre.

By the way, in this wonderful earworm of a song, the main character's heart is noted as being "as full as a baked potato".
4. Packer, after his opening song, just happens to wander into a miners' camp where a bunch of them are going to Colorado in search of better prospects. They are to be led there by their trusty guide, Lucky Larry. The miners instead choose Packer. Why?

Answer: Lucky Larry is struck by lightning and killed

Yep, out of the clear blue sky, Lucky Larry is killed by a bolt of lightning - his still burning corpse makes a graphic appearance during the departure song. Packer, who has only really ever visited Colorado, is given all the group's trust and we see that almost instantly Packer gets them all lost and wandering about the western US until the inevitable end.
5. Packer is supposed to get them to the Provo outpost in three weeks, but as he is a horrible guide it takes much longer to get there. When they finally arrive, they encounter the miners' worst enemies, another western group who sing that they "can catch a helpless animal, Skin it with my bare hands." Who are these people?

Answer: Trappers

The trappers take an instant liking to Packer's horse and tell him that, as an Arabian, his horse belongs with them. Very soon, Packer loses his horse to the trappers and mopes around for most of the rest of the musical with a broken heart. The trappers will hound and attack the miners or "diggers" as they call them throughout the rest of the musical. We will see them several more times in the show, especially at the end.
6. Packer promises to get them to the Colorado territory in five weeks. Instead, he gets them lost, they are washed down the Colorado river, and his horse runs away. He is heartbroken at the loss of his horse and reminisces about her, singing, "There was nothing I couldn't do, when I was____." How does the line finish?

Answer: on top of you

Packer really loves his horse, and misses her constantly. As you will see in the remaining parts of the musical, he leads the party astray and ultimately to their deaths in pursuit of his horse. It is simply too bad that the horse doesn't reciprocate that love.
7. Packer and his lost group encounter a "native" tribe who takes them in / takes them prisoner. They speak a foreign language, and dress in feather headdresses, and claim to be Indians. However, their words, their long straight swords, and especially the fact that all of their teepees are painted white with a big red circle on them, gives away their true nationality. What are they?

Answer: Japanese

In another theme that shows up regularly in the "South Park" series of shows, the Indians are actually Japanese. Stone and Parker have made no secret of their love for Japan and Japanese culture and the theme of Japan shows up often in their work. The fact that this tribe is Japanese has NO bearing on the story except that it is just played for extreme silliness and gave Stone and Parker a chance to employ some of their Japanese friends on their project.
8. Ignoring the warnings of the "natives", Packer and his group head off into the teeth of a coming storm in the Colorado Rockies. They encounter the Cyclops, a massive, one-eyed, renegade Confederate soldier, and lose most of their supplies. As starvation and madness set in, one member of the group decides to build a snowman and sings as he does so. He suggests names for his snowman including "Tom, George, Bob.." and what? Remember, this musical is nuts.

Answer: Beowulf

In another great short of a song, this ditty is full-on madness and not only features the line, "We can call him Bob, or we can call him Beowulf," which arhythmically scans in the best possible way, but is interrupted with a tap dance number partway through.

While this song is being sung, the rest of the group simply stares slack-jawed at the madness unfolding in front of them. When the song ends, one of the miners destroys the snowman with a pickaxe. Days wear on and the miners eat their shoes for sustenance. When the musical suggestion to "build a snowman" is brought up again, they shoot the singer to death...our first victim, our first meal.
9. After killing and eating the singer of the "Let's Build a Snowman" song, the Packer group presses on until they are stuck in the high mountains. Unable to move, Packer volunteers to go for help. Upon his return he finds that which member of his party has eaten the entire group?

Answer: The Mormon Missionary

In a turn of events that is absolutely predictable, the most pious of the group, the Mormon (again, see "Book of Mormon" - their hit musical) has murdered the entire group in the mountains and eaten them braised over a fire. The missionary tries to justify himself to Packer and when that doesn't work he tries to eat him. Packer tries to kills the Mormon in a series of increasingly slapstick ways including stabbing him through the skull with an awl, cleaving his skull with a machete, and throwing horseshoes at him.

The Mormon, of course, keeps on coming until he is finally stopped with a pickaxe through his chest.
10. After killing the cannibal, Packer returns to civilization where he is arrested, tried and convicted for the crime. In the final scene of the musical, Packer is on a scaffold with a rope around his neck while the townspeople sing for his death. How does the musical end?

Answer: The "Indian" chief rescues Packer, who marries the reporter.

If this was the hardest question to answer, I am glad. Parker and Stone are so weird that any of these outcomes could be correct. In the end the "Indian", who is actually Japanese, rescues Packer from the scaffold. However, the very last thing that happens is that the Mormon, blind and impaled but not yet dead, rises up behind them and chases the heroes off the stage.
