The song "Wig in a Box" comes from the award-winning 1998 musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch". A rock musical, it has some elements coming from the life of John Cameron Mitchell who wrote the accompanying book then directed and starred in the 2001 film of the same name.
It follows a gay East German rock singer as she follows another rock star who gained fame through music stolen from her, although it is a bit more complicated than that. The musical has a bit of a cult following.
2. "Annie"
Coming from Act II of the 1977 Broadway musical "Annie", the song is "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile". In the 2014 musical film adaptation the song was covered by the Australian singer Sia, the song charting in a few countries. The musical is based on the 1924 comic strip "Little Orphan Annie". This in turn was inspired by an 1885 poem by James Whitcomb Riley originally called "The Elf Child". His inspiration was orphan Mary Alice "Allie" Smith, who lived in his household as a child. A name change to the poem and a printing error saw Allie turned into Annie.
3. "Jersey Boys"
The award-winning 2004 jukebox musical "Jersey Boys" is a documentary-style presentation, split into four 'seasons', of the 1960s music group the Four Seasons. It features many of the band's hits and includes two songs in which eyes feature in the song title, namely "My Eyes Adored You" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You".
4. "Top Hat"
"Top Hat" is a 2011 British stage musical based on the 1935 musical film "Top Hat" which features music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. The song "Cheek To Cheek" was written specifically for Bing Crosby who was co-starring in the film with Ginger Rogers. The song was nominated for an Oscar in 1936. The British stage musical won multiple Laurence Olivier Awards in 2013.
5. "Aida"
The song "My Strongest Suit" comes from the musical adaptation of the Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Aida" (premiered in 1871). Elton John wrote the music for the 1998 adaptation (also called "Aida" or "Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida") with the lyrics coming from Tim Rice. "My Strongest Suit" fits with the Motown genre with other songs classed as modern reggae, gospel and pop, amongst others.
The song, sung by Amneris and the Women of the Palace, is basically saying that their best attribute is the way they dress.
6. "My Fair Lady"
With at least 100 recorded versions, "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" was originally written for the 1956 musical "My Fair Lady", an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play "Pygmalion". Professor Higgins sings the song after Eliza Doolittle has chosen to walk out of his life. Rex Harrison originally sang the song in the musical.
He also reprised his role in the 1964 film adaptation.
7. "Swing!"
"Swing!" is a 1999 musical designed to celebrate the Swing era of jazz, which covered the period from 1930 to 1946. There is no dialogue in the show, with the story told in music and dance. One of the big band standards to appear in Act I is "A String of Pearls", which was originally a chart-topping hit for Glenn Miller and His Orchestra in 1941.
8. "Irene"
The dress shown is not the famous blue gown after which the song "Alice Blue Gown" is written. The song was inspired by the socialite Alice Roosevelt Longworth's signature gown. She was the eldest daughter of President Roosevelt. Her most unique claim is probably meeting 16 US presidents during her lifetime.
The song comes from the 1919 musical "Irene", which was based on the play "Irene O'Dare" by James Montgomery.
9. "Grease"
The song "Born to Hand Jive" has been in a number of productions since the 1971 musical "Grease" was first staged. The original Chicago production song "Boogie Man Boogie" in Act II was replaced by "Born to Hand Jive". It was first sung by Johnny Casino and Company and in some later productions by Vince Fontaine and Company.
It is sung as part of the hand jive dance contest organised by MC Vince Fontaine.
10. "Ain't Misbehavin'"
Composed in 1936, the jazz song "Your Feet's Too Big" has been recorded by many artists including Fats Waller, who tended to ad-lib the lyrics with his own versions. The song appears in the 1978 award-winning tribute musical "Ain't Misbehavin'" which celebrates the music of Fats Waller. The title to the musical is taken from one of the songs Waller is known for.
