Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the shark with the tool-shaped front end?

Answer: Hammerhead

Hammerhead sharks form the family Sphyrnidae. There are nine species of hammerheads, of which seven have been determined to be endangered or critically endangered, while one is vulnerable, and another has not yet been assessed. The head of this shark is also known as the cephalofoil. Scientists are not absolutely sure of the reason for the cephalofoil of these sharks, but many suggest that having the eyes on the ends of the extensions of the head allows the shark better vision when hunting its prey. Depending on species, hammerhead sharks typically range from 0.9 to 6.0 m (2 ft 11 in to 19 ft 8 in) in length and weigh from 3 to 580 kg (6.6 to 1,300 lb).

They can be found in warmer waters along the coastlines of all continents except Antarctica.
2. What is the edible jellied loaf of animal parts shown here?

Answer: Headcheese

Headcheese, also known as head cheese, is a loaf that is made of edible parts of the head meat of calves and pigs, sometimes including the tongue or brains. Occasionally, the loaf is made with the head of sheep or cows. The name of this food is a bit misleading because it contains no dairy products, and hence no cheese.

Instead, the edible bits are set in a jelly that is placed in a mold. It is then sliced and eaten cold or at room temperature, often in sandwiches.
3. What group did Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson form in 1985? The ___________

Answer: Highwaymen

Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson were all solo country music stars before they got together to form The Highwaymen. The four came together in 1985 to form one of the first groups in the outlaw country subgenre. Between 1985 and 1995, they recorded three studio albums.

The first one, "Highwayman" was released in 1985. It reached Number One on the US Country charts. Their second album, "Highwayman 2" was released in 1990. It reached Number Four on the US Country charts.

Their final studio album, "The Road Goes On Forever" was released in 1995. It reached Number Forty-two on the US Country charts. The four also starred in the made-for-television western movie "Stagecoach" in 1986. The group toured together until the late 1990s when the health of Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings started to decline.
4. What is one way to measure the power of an engine?

Answer: Horsepower

James Watt, the Scottish inventor, created the term "horsepower". In 1776, he was looking for a way to describe how the engines that he was inventing were better than the other power of the day - horses. He decided to explain engine power by showing the relationship between how much weight a horse can lift while pulling a rope running through a pulley to a weight on the ground one foot high in one second, and comparing that rate to the power in the engines that he was inventing.

This was it likely not a precise measure because it would depend on things like the size and age of a horse.

The measure stuck around, though, and became more precise over the years. Today, horsepower refers to the power needed to for an engine move 550 pounds one foot in one second, or by the power needed to move 33,000 pounds one foot in one minute.
5. What can a, typically male, celebrity with good looks be described as?

Answer: Heartthrob

The word heartthrob is technically gender-neutral, but usually describes a male. Heartthrobs are usually actors or musicians with extraordinary looks who make our hearts throb with romantic desire. Heartthrobs could also be the cute high school athlete that all the girls want to date.

The Oxford English Dictionary first cited the word heartthrob in 1839 to mean "a pulsation of the heart". It slowly morphed until the 1920s when it started to be used to describe someone who makes you feel romantic.
6. What is the appliance that adds moisture to the air?

Answer: Humidifier

Humidifiers are used indoors in dry climates to add humidity to the air in homes. This is done when they release steam or water vapour into the air. Low humidity in homes can cause dry skin, irritate your nasal passages and throat, cause nosebleeds, and make your eyes itchy. Adding humidity to the air can help to relieve these symptoms. Care needs to be taken when using humidifiers, though. Dirty reservoirs and filters in humidifiers can quickly breed bacteria and mold.

This may be more dangerous than simple dry air because it can cause breathing difficulties and lung infections. If used, humidifiers need to be cleaned every few days to ensure they remain bacteria free.
7. What type of education were many families forced to adopt during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Answer: Homeschool

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, many school boards closed schools to in-person learning. Students were forced to stay home and parents had to homeschool their children. In non-pandemic times, some parents choose to homeschool their children. Essentially, to homeschool children, it means to provide education at home. Children learn about all subjects without attending classes in a school, but are rather taught by their parents or another caregiver outside of school, typically in family groups.
8. What are the accessories that allow one to hear audible signals without disturbing those in the near vicinity?

Answer: Headphones

The very first device that might be described as a "headphone" was used by telephone operators in the 1890s. It was a single earpiece that rested on the operator's shoulder that weighed over ten pounds! In 1910, US engineer Nathaniel Baldwin invented the first pair of headphones at his kitchen table in 1910. They resemble modern headphones, with speakers that cover each ear that are connected by a band over the head. These were not stereo headphones, but apparently the US Navy didn't care because they ordered many pairs right away without knowing that they were being built by hand at a kitchen table.

The first modern stereo headphones were built by John Koss in 1958. He was a jazz lover who invented them to listen to his music using quality equipment instead of monograph aviation headphones. These first stereo headphones were essentially miniature speakers covered with cardboard and sofa foam. Headphones evolved over the years to wireless earbuds that are available in the 2020s.
9. What is an informal gathering where folk music is played and the audience is often encouraged to dance?

Answer: Hootenanny

A hootenanny is usually a party with folk music and dancing. Joan Baez made the analogy that "a hootenanny is to folk singing what a jam session is to jazz" in a Time magazine interview in 1962. It has also been used in the Appalachian region in the US as a placeholder in language for a word that is forgotten.

This would be used similarly to "thingamajig" or "whatsamacallit". So, if someone forgets the name of something, they might be heard to say, "hand me that hootenanny".
10. What is the dangerous condition that results from the body getting too hot?

Answer: Heatstroke

Heatstroke, also called sunstroke, is a very dangerous condition that occurs if the body temperature rises above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). It is caused by overexertion in hot, humid conditions. Symptoms can include confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness. If it is left untreated, heatstroke can lead to organ failure, coma, or death. If heatstroke is suspected, immediately cooling the body is imperative.

This can be done by applying frozen ice packs or frozen vegetables to the armpits, neck, and groin, drinking slightly salty fluids, laying in shady areas, immersing in cool water, and removing any unnecessary clothing that may add to the body temperature.

A person with heatstroke should be transported to the hospital for medical treatment to further lower the body temperature.
