Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Linnet Ridgeway engaged to, at the beginning of the book?

Answer: Lord Charles Windlesham

The story began with the rich heiress, Linnet Ridgeway, expecting to marry Lord Windlesham. She also met up with one of her oldest friends, Jackie (real name Jacqueline) de Bellefort, who persuaded Linnet to give her boyfriend, Simon Doyle, a job as a land agent, so Jackie and Simon could get married.

2. Who did Hercule Poirot overhear talking about a honeymoon in Egypt at Chez Ma Tante restaurant?

Answer: Simon Doyle and Jackie de Bellefort

The restaurant was run by a M. Blodin, who always made sure there was a table for Poirot. It is the first time Poirot had seen Simon and Jackie, but they seemed to be in love with each other. Poirot, however, does not introduce himself to the couple.

3. What piece of Linnet's jewellery was stolen?

Answer: Pearls

Linnet loved her pearls, and they were "insured against every possible danger". Tim Allerton stole her pearls and replaced them with fake pearls. Miss Van Schyler, who had kleptomania, stole the fake ones, after Linnet was murdered. Her nurse, Miss Bowers, brought the fake ones back to Hercule Poirot. Tim Allerton was found out, he returned the pearls, and moved on.

4. Where was Linnet's stolen jewelry discovered?

Answer: In a rosary

Tim Allerton was planning to pass the pearls on to his friend, Joanna Southwood, but changed his mind. Joanna was also a friend of Linnet Ridgeway before she married Simon Doyle. Tim's mother did not approve of her son's friendship with Joanna.

5. Who wanted to marry Cornelia Robson?

Answer: Mr Ferguson

Mr Ferguson asked Cornelia to marry him, but she turned him down and accepted Doctor Bessner's proposal. Ferguson, when he heard of this, called Bessner a "disgusting old man" and pointed out that he had a potbelly. To which Cornelia responded that she had round shoulders and it's the inner beauty that really matters.

6. Which character, who also appeared in "Cards on the Table", assists Hercule Poirot in "Death on the Nile"?

Answer: Colonel Race

Colonel Race is on the same Nile trip, trying to track down forgers. Captain Hastings did not appear in "Cards on the Table", although Superintendent Battle, Ariadne Oliver (the mystery writer) and Colonel Race did. None of the incorrect options are in this book.

7. Which of these men was a doctor?

Answer: Carl Bessner

Dr. Bessner was German. He was the one who fixed up Simon Doyle's leg after Jackie shot him. Later, Cornelia Robson agreed to marry Dr. Bessner.

8. Which duo were the murderers?

Answer: Jackie de Bellefort and Simon Doyle

Their plan was that Simon would marry and kill Linnet, inherit her money, and then marry and live happily with Jackie. Thanks to Hercule Poirot, the plan failed and the pair committed suicide.

9. How many people died in total in "Death on the Nile"?

Answer: Five

The first death was Linnet Doyle. Hers was the main murder that Hercule Poirot investigated. The second death was that of Linnet's maid, Louise Bourget, for she knew who the murderer was and therefore needed to be silenced. The third death belonged to Salome Otterbourne, for she had witnessed the murderer kill Louise, and needed to be silenced as well. The fifth death was Simon Doyle's. As he had been one of the co-murderers, his partner in crime, Jacqueline de Bellefort, killed him, and then herself, so that they wouldn't face charges.

Linnet Doyle, Louise Bourget, Salome Otterbourne, Simon Doyle, and Jacqueline de Bellefort = five deaths.

10. There is a short story called "(A) Death on the Nile", which does not feature Hercule Poirot! Who appears in it?

Answer: Mr Parker Pyne

Apparently, in early drafts of Poirot's "Death on the Nile", Miss Marple was supposed to be the main detective! The short story can be found in "Parker Pyne Investigates". The only resemblance between the two stories is that they take place on the Nile river.
