2. Widely employed in both ancient and modern works of literature, prophecies are a type of what common narrative device?

Answer: foreshadowing

In a work of fiction, narrative devices serve the purpose of moving the plot forward. One of the oldest of these devices, foreshadowing gives an advance hint of what is going to happen later in the story. While it can be provided by the title itself, foreshadowing is most often accomplished by an event in the narrative, such as a prophecy or a dream. Some of the best-known examples of foreshadowing through prophecy appear in Shakespeare's works - notably "Macbeth" and "Julius Caesar". The device is also frequently used in modern fantasy literature: prominent examples are found in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series.

Deus ex machina refers to an improbable event that brings the story to an end, while a red herring is something that leads to a false conclusion, and a cliffhanger is a dangerous or shocking situation that occurs at the very end of a narrative.
