Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

"The Catcher in the Rye" is a novel by J. D. Salinger that was first published in 1951. It follows the disaffected teenager Holden Caulfield in New York City over a few days after he leaves prep school. The novel has sold over 65 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 30 languages. It has frequently appeared on lists of banned or challenged books, particularly in the United States.

The following are some of the characters in the novel and, therefore, the correct answers to our quiz:

Holden Caulfield is the novel's narrator and protagonist. He is a sixteen-year-old student struggling with grief, isolation, and the transition to adulthood.

Phoebe Caulfield is Holden's ten-year-old sister. She is intelligent and perceptive, and is one of the few characters he respects for her authenticity.

Allie Caulfield was Holden's younger brother who died of leukaemia. His death has a profound effect on Holden's outlook.

D. B. Caulfield is Holden's older brother, a writer working in Hollywood, whom Holden views as having "sold out".

Jane Gallagher is Holden's childhood friend and former neighbour. He remembers her with nostalgia and affection, but she never appears directly.

Stradlater is Holden's roommate at Pencey Prep. He is handsome and self-confident, but also superficial and self-centred.

Ackley is Holden's socially awkward and often irritating dorm neighbour with poor personal hygiene.

Mr Spencer is Holden's history teacher at Pencey Prep and tries to offer him life advice.

Sally Hayes is an attractive and socially sophisticated girl that Holden dates in New York; she does not share his disdain for societal conventions.

Carl Luce is an older acquaintance from school whom Holden seeks out for advice about relationships and sexuality.

Mr Antolini is Holden's former English teacher, who offers guidance, though a later incident complicates Holden's trust in him.

Maurice is a pimp who confronts Holden after he hires Sunny, a prostitute.

Mr Thurmer is the headmaster of Pencey Prep and represents the school authority that Holden finds constraining.

Sunny is a young prostitute whom Holden hires but ultimately does not engage with sexually.

James Castle is a student at Elkton Hills who commits suicide by jumping out of a window.

The incorrect answers are characters from various American literary works: Nick Carraway and Daisy Buchanan (both from "The Great Gatsby"), Esther Greenwood ("The Bell Jar"), Gene Forrester ("A Separate Peace") and Jim O'Connor ("The Glass Menagerie").
