In 1972, the "Theme From Shaft" won the Oscar for Best Original Song. It was the first time an African American man, Isaac Hayes, won the award. The song came from the crime action film starring Richard Roundtree.
2. The Way We Were
Written by Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman, and Marvin Hamlisch and performed by Barbra Streisand, "The Way We Were" was the title of the 1973 film starring Streisand and Robert Redford. The song won the Best Original Song award in 1974 at the 46th Academy Awards. The song finished as the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart for the year.
3. Evergreen
In 1977 at the 49th Academy Award ceremony, Barbra Streisand once again won the Oscar for a song released in a film she starred in. "Evergreen" was also titled "Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born'". The film co-starred Kris Kristofferson as an aging rock star. The song "Evergreen" also won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year.
4. Last Dance
"Last Dance" took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1979 at the 51st Academy Award ceremony. At the peak of the disco era, Donna Summer's classic played a key role in the film "Thank God It's Friday". While the disco-themed film did not do well at the box office, the song won Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 21st Annual Grammy Awards.
5. Up Where We Belong
In 1983 at the 55th Academy Award presentation, "Up Where We Belong" from the film "An Officer and A Gentleman" won the Best Original Song Oscar. The song was recorded by the duo of Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes. The film starred Richard Gere and Debra Winger.
6. Flashdance... What A Feeling
In 1984 at the 56th Academy Awards, "Flashdance... What A Feeling" from the film "Flashdance" took home the Academy Award. The song was recorded by Irene Cara who also sang "Fame" three years earlier and won the same Academy Award. The song "Flashdance" was an uplifting dance number that captured the movie's theme of a female welder with a dream of dancing at an elite New York dance school.
7. Say You, Say Me
In 1986 at the 58th Academy Awards, Lionel Richie's song "Say You, Say Me" took home the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song after being released on the film soundtrack for "White Nights". The movie starred Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov as a Russian dancer who defected to the United States.
8. Take My Breath Away
Berlin's song "Take My Breath Away" on their album "Count Three And Pray" became the love theme of the movie "Top Gun". In 1987 at the 59th Academy Award celebration, the song took home the Oscar. The film starred Tom Cruise as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a naval pilot who trained at the United States Navy's Fighter Weapons School.
9. Under the Sea
At the 62nd presentation of the Academy Awards in 1990, Disney's "Under the Sea" from the film "The Little Mermaid" took home the Best Song award. It was composed by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. The animated film told the story of a mermaid named Ariel. This was the first time a Disney film won the award since "Mary Poppins" in 1965.
10. Sooner Or Later
At the 63rd Academy Awards in 1991, Stephen Sondheim took home the Academy Award for his song "Sooner Or Later" on the "Dick Tracy" soundtrack. At the award ceremony, Madonna, who sang and starred in the film, appeared with her date Michael Jackson.
