The psychological drama "American Beauty" (1999) stars Kevin Spacey in the role of Lester Burnham. The film starts with Burnham's disclosure that he will die so the film is not so much about what will happen, but why. It could be described as a bit of a whodunnit as the film follows the motivations of various people in Lester Burnham's life in the lead up to his murder when the viewer finds out who is responsible.

The starting point is that Burnham is going through a mid-life crisis in, what is for him, a superficial world. His is not a happy life and the spark which changes this for him occurs when he is dragged out to see his daughter perform as a cheerleader. He becomes infatuated with his daughter's friend. His behaviour in turn affects those around him.

The film closes with a reflective monologue where Burnham has reached a state of peace despite all the dysfunction in and around his life, as depicted earlier in the film. The film went on to win 89 awards from 160 nominations, including five Oscars. Spacey won Best Actor, Sam Mendes won Best Director in his debut feature film and Alan Ball won Best Original Screenplay.
