Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What American History event occurs during the course of the movie?

Answer: Bicentennial of the American Revolution

It takes place during the American Bicentennial, in 1976. This is mentioned several times during the movie and at the very beginning. In fact, it is the newspaper article about the Bicentennial that gives Spurrier the idea for the contest.
2. Which actor plays Steven Spurrier?

Answer: Alan Rickman

Alan Rickman does his usual great job with this role. He has also been in "Galaxy Quest" and plays Professor Snape in the "Harry Potter" movies. Bill Pullman plays Jim Barrett, Chris Pine plays Bo Barrett and Dennis Farina plays Maurice.
3. What does the title "Bottle Shock" refer to?

Answer: The wine

It refers to what happens when wine travels a great distance. When it does travel, the wine could get shaken up, which causes sediments to mix in the wine, affecting the flavor. The wine usually settles down in a few days to a month or so.
4. The movie is based on real events.

Answer: True

It is very loosely based on real events. The "Judgement of Paris" was a wine tasting contest conducted in 1976 in France. The tasting was done blind; that is, no one knew which wines were from California and which were from France.
5. Who is Sam?

Answer: The intern

Sam is the eager and willing intern who drives up in a VW Bug that has seen better days. She is played by Rachael Taylor.
6. What happens to Chateau Montelena's wine after it is bottled?

Answer: It turns brown.

The wine turns brown but still tastes great. We learn that there is a natural browning agent in the grapes that is negated when the wine is exposed to even a slight amount of oxygen. "The perils of perfection", as the wine expert tells Sam and Bo.
7. How does Steven Spurrier get the wine from California to France?

Answer: He has each bottle carried by a passenger.

In a great scene, Steven and Bo persuade the other passengers on the flight to Paris to carry a bottle, as you are only allowed to carry one bottle on the plane.
8. Jim Barrett and Steven Spurrier get along.

Answer: False

Jim definitely does not like or trust Steven. He makes this very plain during their various interactions. He thinks Steven is trying to set up the Americans to lose. Some of the funniest scenes in the movie involve these two characters.
9. Who wins the blind taste test competition?

Answer: The Americans win both red and white tests.

The Americans win both categories, much to the surprise and chagrin of the French. Both winning bottles are stored in the Smithsonian Institution, to recognize the achievement.
10. At the end of the movie, you discover that Steven Spurrier has a taste testing to mark the 30th anniversary of the original event. Who wins this event?

Answer: The Americans

The Americans win again, much to Spurrier's surprise, as he expects the French to win this time. It is not explained in the movie why he expects the French to win. However, according to an article by Linda Murphy in the San Francisco Chronicle, published May 25, 2006 after the 30th anniversary, the French thought that the California wines would not age well, and that the French wines would hold up better over time.
