Answer: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was released in 1937. Walt Disney was presented an honorary Oscar at the 11th Academy Awards in 1939. It was a full-sized Oscar statuette with seven miniature ones standing on wooden steps next to it, representing each dwarf. The inscription on the base says: "To Walt Disney for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, recognized as a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field for the motion picture cartoon."

Shirley Temple was chosen to present it to him as a representative of all the children in the world. In an interview, she said she was sad for Snow White, because she was left out.

Answer: Josh Billings

The quote, borrowed from Josh Billings, was originally published in an 1874 collection of his writings. It states: "In the whole history of the world there is but one thing that money can not buy... to wit - the wag of a dog's tail."

Immediately following his quote, the film's foreword concludes: "So it is to all dogs-be they Ladies or Tramps-that this picture is respectfully dedicated."

Answer: Alice in Wonderland

Paramount Pictures released their own version the same year, so Disney scrapped the idea. Years later they revisited the idea and decided to make it fully animated. It premiered in London on July 26, 1951.

14 year old Kathryn Beaumont, who provided Alice's voice, was filmed while she acted out all of the scenes while dressed in costume. This helped the animators design more realistic movements.

Answer: Bambi

"Bambi" premiered in London in 1942, four days before being shown in the United States. It was premiered there in hopes of lifting spirits during World War II. There were also hopes of gaining international buzz before premiering in the United States.

One of the animators went to his home state of Maine to photograph and paint pictures of forests, deer, and other animals. He even had two fawns shipped to the studio so the animators could study them.

Answer: Robin Hood

"Robin Hood" was released in 1973, seven years after Walt Disney's death. Although "Jungle Book" was the first animated Disney film to be released after his death, he had some creative input. "Robin Hood" was the first to have no involvement whatsoever.

Answer: Pocahontas

"Pocahontas" was loosely based on facts. In reality, when John Smith arrived, she was only 9 or 10 years old, while he was 27. Pocahontas, however, was the first Disney princess to be based on a real person.

Answer: Frozen

Walt Disney wanted to make an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen", but he had a difficult time making her character work. It wasn't until dealing with sisters, Elsa and Anna, that the concept finally clicked.

The song "Let It Go" was sung by Idina Menzel and won an Oscar.

"The Black Cauldron" was given the PG rating due to the scary and violent content. Many children cried at the test screenings, which prompted many edits.

"The Black Cauldron" was also the first Disney movie to use CGI.

Answer: Mammal of the Year

"Time Magazine" almost put Dumbo on the cover of their December 29, 1941 issue and gave him the title "Mammal of the Year". The bombing of Pearl Harbor occurred and understandably, Dumbo was replaced. However, he did get a small insert in the magazine.

Answer: The Hunchback of Notre Dame

"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is loosely based on Victor Hugo's novel. The name Quasimodo means "half formed". The movie is considered to be one of Disney's most mature animated features and was even boycotted by some groups.
