Gambling magnate Donald Sinclair (John Cleese) and his high roller friends develop this scheme, because they are bored with everyday gambling, which they find no longer excites them. Sinclair offers six guests (and their partners) the chance to win two million dollars if they are the first to find it in a locker. Meanwhile, the high rollers will bet on who they think will win the race.

The participants are told that the money is in a bag which is in a locker at the Silver City train station. It is up to them to figure out the best way to get there and there are no rules. Each individual guest or team is given one key to the locker which they will need to unlock and claim the money.

Answer: Enrico Pollini

None of the people who found tokens are initially interested in participating in the rat race. Most believe it to be some kind of scam or joke. However, Italian tourist Enrico Pollini (Rowan Atkinson) is the only one who wants to play along, although he is more interested in the race itself than the cash prize.

Unfortunately, Enrico suffers from narcolepsy, which causes him to fall asleep and often fall behind. Greed, however, gets the better of everyone else when they realize that they could have a clean shot at the money since they don't believe anyone else is going to participate.

Answer: A locksmith

The Cody Brothers, Duane and Blaine (Seth Green and Vince Vieluf), fail to secure seats on a flight to Silver City that most of the other racers are on so they take out the air traffic control tower which forces everyone to find land transport to Silver City.

They figure they can double their chances by splitting up. However, they only have the one key so they go to a locksmith to make a duplicate. The locksmith, however, overhears them talk about the money and absconds with the key. The brothers chase after him through the southwest countryside.

Answer: Lucille Ball impersonators

Owen Templeton is a referee who made a bad call during the coin toss at a football game. As a result, he became an infamously hated person in America. He struggles to find a taxi as no driver will pick him up and the one who does, seeks revenge on him for losing a bet because of Owen's bad call. Owen winds up trekking through the desert until he steals a bus full of Lucille Ball impersonators, and must deal with their antics, which constantly slow him down and cause the bus to crash.

Answer: A squirrel

Vera and Merrill are a recently reunited mother and daughter pair. Vera put Merrill up for adoption as a baby and they decided to meet for the first time, since her birth, at the casino. Merrill is a successful businesswoman while Vera is an overly cheery and proud mother.

They seem to have the least trouble in finding a rental car after their flight is canceled. In a stretch of desert, they stop to ask for directions at a stand run by a squirrel lady (Kathy Bates), who tries to sell the pair a squirrel.

When they refuse, the lady gives Vera and Merrill wrong directions which sends them flying off a cliff, wrecking their car. The two are forced to trek through the desert until they steal a rocket car to get them to Silver City.

Answer: Klaus Barbie Museum

Randy Pear (Jon Lovitz) is a compulsive gambler who constantly lies to his wife Beverly (Kathy Najimy) about getting a new job. They are in Vegas on vacation with their two children Jason and Kimberly (Brody Smith and Jillian Marie Hubert). The Pears are not happy when Randy cuts their vacation short to go to Silver City as he does not initially tell them about the money, to cover up that he was gambling.

The family insists Randy stop at the Barbie Museum, which they believe to be a Barbie Doll museum.

However, it is actually a museum dedicated to Klaus Barbie, an ally of Hitler. While inside, the brothers steal the Pear's car forcing the Pears to steal Hitler's car.

Answer: He meets a girl with a helicopter.

Nick Schaffer (Breckin Meyer) is the most reluctant to participate in the race, thinking it is a bunch of nonsense. However, once the air traffic control tower is taken out, grounding the other racers, Nick meets Tracy, whom he is smitten with. Tracy is a helicopter pilot who flies on a different system. Realizing that he is not only attracted to Tracy but she can also fly him to Silver City before anyone else, Nick asks her to fly him.

She agrees as she is also attracted to him. However, on the flight, Tracy checks in on her boyfriend (Dean Cain) and catches him cheating.

This causes her to crash the helicopter and forces the duo to steal Tracy's boyfriend's truck.

Answer: Enrico Pollini

Enrico manages to arrive in Silver City before the other racers but falls asleep with the key in the lock without opening it. The other five teams arrive at the same time shortly afterward and fight for the locker, realizing Enrico is asleep. When the locker is finally opened, they find it empty.

Answer: It is donated to charity.

After discovering the locker empty, the racers learn Grisham (Dave Thomas) has stolen the money, alongside a call girl named Vicki (Brandy Ledford). They chase after them but the money winds up attached to the hot air balloon piloted by the locksmith. Everyone chases the balloon through the desert until they catch up with it. Everyone manages to grab some of the money but they find themselves in the middle of a charity benefit concert, led by the band Smash Mouth.

After realizing their greed got the best of them, the racers donate the money to the Feed the Earth cause.
