Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the brief prequel, "The Uncut Story Of Mewtwo's Origin", what is Dr Fuji's motivation for carrying out genetic experiments?

Answer: to bring his dead daughter back to life

Dr Fuji is a scientist haunted by the death of his daughter, Amber. He became interested in cloning, hoping that if he successfully conducted the cloning process, he could eventually discover the secret to recreating life. Dr Fuji and a team of scientists create Mewtwo in a laboratory, along with Ambertwo, Bulbasaurtwo, Charmandertwo, and Squirtletwo, all clones of the originals. Only Mewtwo survives the stressful cloning process, and gets agitated at the loss of the others. Mewtwo's memory of them is suppressed and calmed, but he remains unsettled, feeling that "something" unpleasant has happened.
2. What does Mewtwo do shortly after gaining consciousness?

Answer: destroys the laboratory he was created in

Being a psychic type, Mewtwo is able to communicate using telepathy. Upon gaining consciousness, Dr Fuji explains to Mewtwo how he was the result of an experiment to clone and enhance the powers of Mew. Mewtwo, already questioning his purpose in existing, becomes enraged and destroys the laboratory and everything around him.

As Dr Fuji watches the destruction, he realizes to his horror that they "dreamed of creating the world's strongest pokemon... and succeeded".
3. Who financed the creation of Mewtwo?

Answer: Giovanni

Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, arrives at the remains of the laboratory and claims that unlike the scientists, he will treat Mewtwo as a partner, suggesting that together, they can control the world. Mewtwo remains unconvinced, but Giovanni tells him that he can help Mewtwo control his powers. By fitting Mewtwo with suppressing armor, Giovanni helps Mewtwo focus his power over time.

As Mewtwo refines his skills and ponders his existence, Giovanni tells him that Mewtwo's purpose is to obey humans. Feeling betrayed, Mewtwo abandons Giovanni, and vows revenge on the world that turned its back on him.
4. What pokemon delivers the New Island invitation to Ash?

Answer: Dragonite

While Ash has a battle with a trainer named Raymond, Mewtwo spies on them from above with a Fearow. Seeing Ash's skill, Mewtwo dispatches a Dragonite to deliver an invitation to Ash to meet "the world's greatest pokemon trainer". Though many invitations are sent out, Mewtwo creates a storm that prevents most trainers from reaching the island.

In the meantime, Mew awakens from a bubble beneath a river and is also drawn to the castle.
5. Who helps row Ash and his friends to New Island?

Answer: Team Rocket

Ever the opportunists, Jessie, James, and Meowth trail Ash and his friends and try to capture Pikachu. Disguised as Vikings -- yes, Vikings -- they offer to row Ash and his friends through the storm to New Island. Midway through the trip, a large wave washes off their disguises, and wrecks the boat. Using their water pokemon, Ash and his friends manage to finish the trip to New Island. Upon arriving, they find that only three other trainers -- Fergus, Corey, and Neesha -- managed to make the trip.
6. What is Mewtwo's intention in inviting trainers to the castle?

Answer: to clone their pokemon

After a brief introduction among the trainers that made it to the island, Mewtwo reveals himself. In the meantime, Team Rocket makes it to the castle and discovers a cloning machine in the lower levels. Mewtwo explains that he will destroy the world in order to recreate it. Because they serve humans, the trainers' pokemon will not be spared either, but their DNA will be enhanced and used to create more powerful copies of those pokemon.
7. Ash's Pikachu is captured in a pokeball.

Answer: True

Mewtwo has a pokemon battle against the trainers, pitting his cloned Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard against Corey's Venusaur, Neesha's Blastoise, and Ash's Charizard. After Mewtwo's clones win handily, Mewtwo sends out clone balls to capture and clone all of the trainers' pokemon. Most of the pokemon are quickly caught, though Pikachu evades them for a while. Pikachu's capture in a clone ball marks the first time he has been in any type of pokeball after being released from one in the first episode of the "Pokemon" series.
8. Who meddles with the cloning machine and ultimately causes it to explode?

Answer: Ash

Though a clone ball captures Pikachu, Ash is hot in pursuit, and they both arrive at the cloning machine. The clone ball makes it into the machine but Ash follows it even there, and with a great deal of struggling forces it out of the clone machine. The damaged machine overloads, releases all the pokemon it cloned, and promptly explodes.

In doing so, it also manages to release all of the original pokemon that were captured in clone balls.
9. What happens to Ash when he gets between Mew and Mewtwo?

Answer: he turns to stone

Though Mewtwo plans to destroy and remake the world, Ash leads the originals to fight them. As they do, Mew shows up and starts playfully exploring the scene. Mewtwo fight Mew to prove his superiority, and the other pokemon are pitted against each other as well. Ash tries to stop the fight between Mewtwo and Mew, running between them. Blasted by both simultaneously, he collapses and turns to stone (which is probably the politest way possible of showing that he dies).
10. How is Ash brought back to life?

Answer: with the tears of the fighting pokemon

Ash's death catches the attention of everybody, person and pokemon alike. Though Mewtwo's plan was to destroy the world, he was shocked that a human would voluntarily risk his life to stop the fighting. The pokemon mourn Ash's loss, but in doing so their life-bearing tears restore Ash to life. Mewtwo ponders the situation: he pitted pokemon against each other, but a human sacrificed himself to save the pokemon. Mewtwo concludes that the circumstances of one's birth are not nearly as important as what one does in life. Mewtwo leaves to find a place to live in isolation, taking the clones with him.
