One of John Wayne's first starring roles was in 1939's "Stagecoach", a western directed by John Ford. He then made "Allegheny Uprising", also a western, for director William Seiter that same year. "Reap the Wild Wind", a drama set off the Florida coast and directed by Cecil B. DeMille, was released in 1942. Wayne made the World War II films "The Fighting Seabees" for director Edward Ludwig in 1944 and "They Were Expendable" in 1945 for John Ford. "Angel and the Badman", a western directed by James Grant, was released in 1947, followed by the "Cavalry Trilogy" of "Fort Apache" in 1948, "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" in 1949, and "Rio Grande" in 1950, all directed by John Ford. The comedy-drama "The Quiet Man", set in Ireland and directed by Ford, was followed by the western saga "The Searchers" in 1956 and the Civil War film "The Horse Soldiers" of 1959, which were both directed by Ford.
Wayne made the comedy western "North to Alaska", directed by Henry Hathaway, in 1960, and another comedic film, "Donovan's Reef", in 1963 with Ford again directing. Wayne rounded out the 1960s with the naval war film "In Harm's Way" for director Otto Preminger in 1965, the western "El Dorado" under Howard Hawks in 1966, and the Vietnam War film "The Green Berets" in 1968, which Wayne co-directed with Ray Kellog. The western "Chisum", directed by Andrew McLagen, was released in 1970, while Wayne's final film, "The Shootist", directed by Don Siegel, was released in 1976. John Wayne died of cancer on June 11, 1979.
