Jerry Landers is an assistant manager at a grocery store called Food World, located in the Los Angeles area of California. He is well liked by the customers of his store and even clashes with upper management about shortchanging the customers for the sake of profit. In one scene, he argues about the way Romaine lettuce and its trim length affects the people.

One night after work he receives a typed invitation from God asking him to meet. Jerry thinks it is a joke, especially as he himself is not very religious. He throws it in the trash can only for it to reappear next to him. Next he rips it up only to see it whole again in the lettuce display. He decides to go to the meeting.

Jerry followed the directions on the printed invitation and arrived at 111 North Hope Street in the city. He took the elevator up to the 27th floor and found a room that was completely white with just a chair and an intercom. There were no other people around. All of a sudden, he hears someone who says he is God speaking through the intercom.

Jerry is very disbelieving that it is God and thinks he is being tricked. The voice of God tells him that the 27th floor they are on does not truly exist. Jerry exits back down the elevator and checks the directory. He also asks a person on the ground floor about how to reach the 27th floor. He discovers that the building only contains 17 floors. Jerry begins to feel he may truly be talking to God who can perform this amazing event.

Jerry's first verbal talk with God was in an interview through an intercom. God tells him that Jerry has been chosen to spread the word that God exists. He also tells him that Jerry hears His voice as a human man because the real vision and sound of God is too powerful to comprehend. God also claims He made some mistakes including tobacco and ostriches. He also said avocados were a mistake as the pits were too large.

Jerry leaves the interview and drives back to work. On the way, God continues to speak to him. This time it is through his broken car radio. God tells Jerry that he is a messenger for God just as Moses was years ago. God said people may have religion but they have lost faith and He needs Jerry's help to fix that by emphasizing God's presence.

Bobbie's feelings about Jerry's "chats" with God vary dramatically throughout the film. The first time that Jerry tells her about his talks with God, her initial response is to think he's sick and offer him chicken soup. Later she becomes frustrated with the attention being paid to the scenario.

At one point she is also very angry and wants Jerry to keep quiet about his relationship with God. Finally, it is toward the end of the film that she begins to be a support for him and backs up his claims.

There are several key messages that Jerry must impart. One is that humans are responsible for the decision to love each other and stop the hate and killing that abound. Another is that people are stewards of the earth and must stop polluting the land and harming the natural order of things. Finally, He gives encouragement that God Himself believes in people and to take hope and encouragement from that thought.

Jerry initially gets written about in the "LA Times" after he visits their offices and tells them about his conversations with God. After that, a couple of local news stories picked up the thread. Soon it began to be heard of nationally and Jerry was invited to come on to Dinah Shore's show called "Dinah!".

During the show, Dinah asked him several questions and was intrigued that he had actually seen God with his own eyes. She brought out a police artist who asked Jerry questions. Soon the police artist had drawn a rendition of the man Jerry described. This image was then shown to the cameras so people could see that God looked like an older gentleman. This visit to the show caused immediate uproar as people flocked to Jerry's home to try to get him to speak to God on their behalf.

Jerry is asked to come to a local hotel's boardroom. There he sat at a table with a group of theology experts that included a bishop, a rabbi, and a televangelist named Rev. Williams. They told Jerry that they did not feel there was enough proof to support his claims and gave him a list of questions he must ask God. He was led back to a hotel room so that he could not contact anyone and get the answers.

God soon came to visit him in the room in the guise of a busboy. God looked over the questions and told Jerry they were written in Ancient Aramaic but He could easily read them. He then proceeded to answer the queries. For one, He mentioned that Jesus was His Son but so was Muhammad and Buddha and even the hotel staff. God also said that Voltaire was correct in that God "was a comedian playing for an audience afraid to laugh". God then instructed Jerry to give the answers to Rev. Williams at his next televangelist event and to tell the Reverend he was a fake and to stop taking people's money.

Jerry had attended the latest televangelist event by Rev. Williams where Jerry had publicly accused the Reverend of taking people's money for his own devices. The Reverend had Jerry arrested and taken to court for the "slanderous" remarks.

In the courtroom, Jerry defended himself (against the Judge's advice). He called God as a witness. At first nothing happened but Jerry used it as proof people had hope. Jerry said that surely everyone in the room had a second of hope in that brief time that God really would show up. Just as Jerry was about to be declared guilty, God walked through the doors. He then took the stand and swore on the Bible to Himself. Next He showed the judge a minor miracle where He made playing cards disappear. Finally, He made Himself disappear as He walked back through the court while telling people to believe in Him. Later his voice was found to have been erased off the tape and his remarks stricken from the court reporter's machine.

After Jerry is cleared of the slander charges, he tries to return to his normal life. However, he is fired from his company. As he leaves for the last time and drives home, he hears a pay phone ring by the side of the road and he stops. It is here that he sees God for the final time and they have a chat.

God tells him that Jerry has done a great job and has planted the seeds of the Message and he should continue this path. When Jerry feels that he will be perceived as "nuts", God tells him that others had done this before such as Louis Pasteur, Columbus, and Einstein (so he is "in good company"). God encouraged Jerry to go to other cities and find new people to aid with the Message. Finally, God tells Jerry that He is going on a safari to spend more time with His animals. He is dressed in a safari outfit. He then tells Jerry to keep talking to Him and even though He may not talk back, He will always listen.
