Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was it that caused the creature in "Tarantula" (1955) to grow so large?

Answer: It ate a super-food which induced growth.

Leo G. Carroll plays Professor Gerald Deemer. He is experimenting, at his laboratory in the Arizona desert, with a serum which will cause animals to grow quickly to great size. His goal is to feed a hungry world by producing giant farm animals. He puts the drug into a super-nutrient animal feed.

A tarantula eats some of it, intended for rabbits and chickens and such, and grows to enormous size. All the professor wanted to do was to give humanity an unlimited food supply. Instead, his discovery gave them a monster.
2. Which of the following motion picture titles, ostensibly from the 1950s, is NOT really a genuine, bona fide movie which was commercially produced and theatrically distributed?

Answer: Abbott and Costello Meet Dracula

Abbott and Costello made four motion pictures in their "Meet the Monsters" series: "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948); "Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man" (1951); "Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1953); and "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy" (1955).

They did not make a film called "Abbott and Costello Meet Dracula" nor "Abbott and Costello Meet the Vampire." In the 1948 movie, Bela Lugosi appears as Dracula, along with other movie monsters.
3. In Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954), the submarine Nautilus is attacked by what sort of monster?

Answer: a giant squid

The Nautilus is forced to dive deep to escape a surface attack and thereby disturbs a giant squid which, in turn, attacks the submarine. Captain Nemo tries unsuccessfully to electrocute the squid. Ned Land, the harpooner, kills the squid, thereby saving Captain Nemo's life.
4. Who played the protagonist Winston Smith in the 1956 science-fiction motion picture "1984"?

Answer: Edmond O'Brien

Eamon Joseph O'Brien (1915-1985) was an Academy Award winning American actor and film director. His stage name was Edmond O'Brien. He starred in "The Barefoot Contessa" (1954), "Seven Days in May" (1964), "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1939), "Fantastic Voyage (1966)" and "The Wild Bunch" (1969).

In "1984," he portrayed Winston Smith, a member of the elite Inner Party in a dystopian state, who slips into subversive thought and love for a woman, both of which are forbidden. Richard Burton played a different role in the 1984 remake of this motion picture.
5. Who wrote the words and music to the title song for "The Blob" (1958)?

Answer: Burt Bacharach and Mack David

The theme song to the motion picture "The Blob" 1958) begins "Beware of the blob, it creeps / And leaps and glides and slides / Across the floor / Right through the door / And all around the wall / A splotch, a blotch / Be careful of the blob." It was written by Burt Bacharach (music) and Mack David (words). Mack David is often confused with Hal David, Mack's brother, with whom Bacharach more frequently partnered.
6. In the 1986 remake of "The Fly" (1958), who plays the role of Seth Brundle, the scientist whose DNA gets mixed up with that of housefly?

Answer: Jeff Goldblum

It is uncommon for a remake of a classic motion picture to fare better than the original. The 1985 remake of "The Fly" won critical acclaim, especially for the acting of Jeff Goldblum and for the film's special effects. Chris Walas and Stephan Dupuis won the Academy Award for Best Makeup for their work in this motion picture.
7. In "The Manster" (1959), what happens to American reporter Larry Stanford when he is injected by Dr. Robert Suzuki with an experimental serum?

Answer: He grows a second head on his shoulder.

Dr. Suzuki is studying genetic changes caused by cosmic rays. He discovers a serum which can gradually create an "evolutionary" change when injected. He gives the journalist a drug which knocks him out, then injects him with the serum. In short order, a third eye grows on Stanford's shoulder, which then grows into an entire second head.
8. For what is James Arness best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

James Arness (1923-2011) was an American motion-picture and television actor. Doubtless his best-known role was as Marshall Matt Dillon on the CBS television series "Gunsmoke" (1955-1975). Arness appeared in many films but rarely in science fiction or horror movies.

He played in "Two Lost Worlds" (1951), "The Thing from Another World" (1951) and "Them!" (1954). Arness won the role of the monster in "The Thing from Another World" because of his great height; he was 6 feet, 7 inches tall!
9. Where is "The Aztec Mummy" (1957) set?

Answer: in modern Mexico

The mummy's-tomb segment at the beginning of the story occurs in the ancient city of Teotihuacán where the ancient pyramids and tombs are located. The scientists in the story are headquartered in modern-day Mexico City, which is where the mummy Popoca comes to recover the golden breastplate stolen from his tomb. The remainder of the action occurs thereabouts.
10. In "The Wasp Woman" (1958), what sort of business enterprise does Janice Starlin head?

Answer: a cosmetics company

Janice Starlin is a model who turned her good looks into a cosmetics company. As age began to tarnish her beauty, she became frantic for a way to look younger. The board of her company suggested that someone else's image adorn their advertising. Threatened, she went to extreme ends to keep her company and her role in it.
