Stuff Fed to Horses Trivia Quiz

Despite sometimes being called "oaters" or "horse operas", Western movies don't often show horses being fed oats, or anything else. Happily, horses appear in other genres too, and even get fed! Here are ten "horsey" films, across all genres, to sample.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Runaway Horse" is the English title of a 1908 short film by French director Louis J. Gasnier. What did the horse eat to fuel his escape?

Answer: A peck of oats

This being a silent film, the information is provided on a title card, so we can know precisely what the horse has fed himself. I say "fed himself" because we see the driver leave horse and cart by the roadside whilst making a delivery. Before the driver returns the horse helps himself to the contents of some bags he sees by the road, and the title card tells us the contents. Thus fuelled the horse takes off, first dragging his cart but later unencumbered as he manages to break free. By the end most of the town is up in arms as the mad dash has destroyed market stalls, carriages and all manner of things. Eventually the horse takes himself home.

Stuff fed to horses: Oats
2. In "Playing the Ponies" (1937), what is fed to the racehorse Thunderbolt to induce him to run faster?

Answer: Chili pepperinos

This is a Three Stooges short comedy, wherein Moe, Larry and Curly trade their restaurant for Thunderbolt, a washed up racehorse. Curly mistakenly feeds the animal some pepperinos (hot peppers) thinking they are peanuts, and the horse dashes for the nearest water trough. The boys enter Thunderbolt in a race, with Larry as jockey, and during it he feeds more peppers to the poor animal, while Moe and Curly dash ahead on a motorbike carrying a bucket of water to encourage Thunderbolt to chase them. This works, they win the race and lots of money. In the final scene the Stooges are eating a turkey each, while Thunderbolt is at the other end of the table with what appears to be a big bowl of oats, with another bowl of apples on the side.

Stuff fed to horses: Hot peppers, oats, apples and water
3. Which of these horse-feeding scenarios did NOT occur in "It Ain't Hay" (1943)?

Answer: A horse eats a peck of oats and runs wild.

This is an Abbott and Costello comedy, based on a story by Damon Runyon. Wilbur (Lou Costello) accidentally kills the horse belonging to King and Peggy O'Hara, a young girl, by feeding the candy to the horse. He and his friend Grover (Bud Abbott) promise to get a replacement, but accidentally take a race horse instead of the intended animal. It is the second horse who eats in the hotel room, whilst being hidden from authorities, and later stops to eat the hay by the tracks. He's pulling a carriage at the time, and it doesn't fare well when a train roars through. Nobody (including the horse) gets hurt. Things get a bit crazy (of course), there's a horse race, Grover may or not win a bet and (again, of course) all is well in the end.

Stuff fed to horses: Candy, hay
4. Jefferson Cody (Randolph Scott) is about to "grain and water the animals" when something interrupts him. The movie is "Comanche Station" (1960), but what causes the interruption?

Answer: Three men being chased by Comanches

Cody knows one of the men and suspects the Comanches have good reason to chase him. They manage to fend off the attack, and Cody can get back to the task of returning Mrs Lowe (Nancy Gates), who had been a prisoner of the Comanche, to her husband. The other three men decide to join them, in hope of collecting the reward that has been offered. Before they leave, the station man does stumble into the station, mortally injured, concerned for the well-being of his animals. Their journey is perilous, but Mrs Lowe does return to her family in the end.

Stuff fed to horses: Grain and water (eventually, we surmise)
5. In the western "A Thunder of Drums" (1961), how does the young cavalry lieutenant trailing a party of what he believes to be Comanches think they got oats to feed their horses?

Answer: From a cavalry troop that has gone missing

George Hamilton plays the young, rather naive lieutenant, while Richard Boone is the older, more experienced captain, who comments that oats do grow wild in the region. They never resolve the question of whose oats the natives, who turn out to be Apaches, were feeding their horses, but they do find the missing troop. None of them have survived, to shed any light on questions of oats or anything else. Boone and Hamilton's troop comes under attack as well, but manage to gain a tactical advantage and some of them survive to return to the fort.

Stuff fed to horses: Oats, again, though possibly wild this time
6. In an iconic scene from "Cat Ballou" (1965), Kid Shelleen and his horse lean against a wall, apparently drunk. Who played the Kid, who we can gather has fed his horse some liquid refreshments?

Answer: Lee Marvin

Lee Marvin won a Best Actor Oscar for playing the dual role of the (usually) drunken gunslinger, Kid Shelleen, and his evil twin brother, hired gun Tim Strawn. Jane Fonda plays Cat Ballou, and the three incorrect answers each play members of her gang, who go about trying to be train robbers. Stubby Kaye and Nat "King" Cole provide a musical narration that ties the story together. At one point Shelleen is sobered up so he can be of more use, but at a critical point he falls off the wagon, apparently taking his horse with him.

Stuff fed to horses: Alcohol (probably)
7. With what foodstuff does Alec initially approach the unruly horse in "The Black Stallion" (1979)?

Answer: Sugar lumps

Alec (Kelly Reno) is a young boy, travelling aboard ship with his father (Hoyt Axton). The boy witnesses a black stallion being mistreated and locked in a room off the deck, and decides to approach him. He steals some sugar lumps from the dining room and places them on the edge of the porthole of the area where the horse is confined. The horse comes forward and eats most of them, but before Alec can do anything else a man pulls him away. Later the ship sinks in a storm, the horse breaks free and saves Alec from drowning. They are the only survivors. Reaching an island they bond, with Alec sometimes giving the horse greens he has gathered. The story takes a turn after they are rescued, and meet Henry (Mickey Rooney) who sees a potential race horse in the stallion.

Stuff fed to horses: Sugar lumps, greens
8. Anna Sewell's novel "Black Beauty", narrated by the eponymous horse, has been filmed more than once. In the 1994 version, Farmer Grey (Sean Bean) uses oats as an aid to training the animal to accept a bit, saddle and shoes. Where does he keep the oats?

Answer: In his pocket

Alan Cumming provides the voice of Black Beauty, and waxes poetic about the "delicious oats, sweet oats, lovely crunchy oats..." and several more descriptive words. The taste of the oats allows the horse to forget the metallic taste of the bit, and carry on with training. Farmer Grey hand feeds these delightful morsels to our hero, reaching into his jacket pocket to grab a handful at strategic moments.

9. In "Half Baked" (1998), what does Kenny (Harland Williams) say he has fed to the police horse Buttercup?

Answer: Candy, chips, fake popcorn and funions

Kenny has been sent out by his buddies, including Dave Chappelle's character, on a munchies run to satisfy cravings brought on by indulging in illegal substances. As he exits the store with an armload of junk food he sees a horse by the curb, decides the horse must be hungry and proceeds to feed all of the food to the animal, which then keels over. The police officer whose horse Buttercup is runs over, distraught and makes an "officer down" call, then asks Kenny what he fed the horse. Kenny reels off the list given above, and the officer tells him that Buttercup is a diabetic, and Kenny has killed his horse. Kenny is arrested, and has to hope that his chums will be able to get him out of trouble.

Stuff fed to horses: Candy, chips, fake popcorn, funions
10. The horse in "Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story" (2005) is established as having a sweet tooth early on, when fed what by Balon (Luis Guzman)?

Answer: Twizzler

Before the race in which Soņador is injured, we see her gobbling down a red twizzler offered to her by stableman Balon. During her recovery, when she is being nursed back to health by Ben Crane (Kurt Russell), we see young Cale Crane (Dakota Fanning) surreptitiously feeding "Sonia" popsicles, and even a big piece of cake. Cale thinks her father doesn't know, until he comments that their race horse is looking "big" whilst training - meaning fat from too many popsicles! Oh, I might mention that Soņador means Dreamer, hence the title, though as Sonia is a filly it should really be Soņadora!

Stuff fed to horses: Twizzler, popsicles, cake
