Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The dragon Smaug sacks the Kingdom of Erebor

This happens in a flashback scene in the first minutes of the first film, entitled "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey".

Erebor was a prosperous Kingdom of the Dwarves, in the northeastern parts of Middle-Earth. Yet, their riches attracted the attention of the greedy dragon Smaug, who sacked Erebor and the nearby city of Dale, inhabited by the race of Men. The Elven king Thranduil of Mirkwood chose to ignore the plea of the impoverished and exiled Dwarves, incurring the wrath of Thorin Oakenshield, grandson of the then King Thror of Erebor, who swore to reclaim his ancestral land.
2. Bilbo Baggins is enlisted by King Thorin Oakenshield as a burglar

After the narrative of the downfall of Erebor, we switch to a young Bilbo Baggins smoking his pipe when the wizard Gandalf the Grey drops by. Gandalf enquires whether Bilbo is ready to join him on an adventure. Bilbo is not particularly willing, yet Gandalf scratches a runic sign on his door, indicating that he has found what he had been looking for: an adventurous Hobbit about to join the company of King Thorin Oakenshield and steal a valuable jewel, the Arkenstone, from the dragon Smaug. Once the jewel is in Thorin's hands, he can rally the seven clans of the Dwarves and march in full force against the dragon.

Although Thorin doubts Bilbo's credentials and Bilbo himself is afraid of what might happen to him, he eventually signs the contract and leaves his familiar home for the adventure he had claimed not to be interested in a mere day before.
3. Bilbo and the dwarves get captured by three trolls

This happens before the first hour of the movie is over, a little after the departure of the company from Bilbo's home. The three trolls, whose names are Tom, Bert and William, are perpetually hungry and have a liking for flesh (although Tom and William don't really appreciate Bert's cooking skills).

When the company gets captured, it takes the wits of Bilbo (who employs various tricks to gain time until the coming of daylight, which turns trolls to stone) and the magic of Gandalf (who brings the dawn a bit earlier than normal) to destroy the trolls.
4. Bilbo defends Thorin from the Pale Orc Azog

This is the culminating scene of the first movie.

Azog, the Pale Orc, is an old enemy of Thorin's, having slain his grandfather. For decades, Thorin believed he had slain Azog in a battle, but the Pale Orc had survived, awaiting for the opportune moment to destroy Thorin. After one of his subordinates had failed to annihilate the dwarves, Azog himself waylays the company after the Misty Mountains ridge. Initially he gains the upper hand and pins Thorin down, ordering an Orc soldier to bring him Thorin's head. Yet, Bilbo, gathering his courage, stands between the Orc and Thorin, which allows the Dwarves to regroup and fend their enemies off until a troop of eagles whisks them off to safety, transporting them to a huge bare rock called the Carrock. The first film ends real soon after this scene.
5. Bilbo and the dwarves meet the skinchanger Beorn

This happens at the beginning of the second film, entitled "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug".

Having left our friends at the Carrock, we rejoin them after they have descended this huge rock. Bilbo notices a huge bear-like creature stalking the party. Ultimately, it turns on them and they find refuge in a house, which belongs to the creature itself. Gandalf tells them that their pursuer is a skinchanger named Beorn, who is not overly fond of Dwarves, yet might help them.

Truly, Beorn provides crucial help by standing guard over the night thus dissuading Azog and his Orcs from attacking the company. On the next day, Beorn reveals that his hatred for the Orcs is greater than his antipathy for the "greedy and blind" Dwarves, since Azog had hunted all his kinsfolk down and tortured them to extinction. Beorn also provides the company with ponies to carry them to the edge of the dark forest of Mirkwood.
6. Bilbo liberates the dwarves from the Elvenking's dungeons

This happens mid-way through the second movie.

Once in the forest of Mirkwood, Thorin and the company had to face the monstrous Spiders of Mirkwood. After a long and tough fight, in which Bilbo distinguished himself, they escaped the Spiders, only to be captured by the local Elves. Their King, the very same Thranduil who had left Thorin's people once without help against the dragon, now wants a deal with Thorin, since, within Smaug's hoard, there are some gems which he covets, given that they are made out of pure starlight. Thorin refuses the deal and is imprisoned. Thankfully, Bilbo had not been captured and was able to liberate his friends by stealing the keys of a guard and smuggling his friends into barrels, which were launched down a nearby river.
7. The dragon Smaug sets forth to attack Laketown

The dragon's foray to Laketown forms the end of the second film.

After the escape from Mirkwood and the Elvenking's dungeons, our friends enter Laketown, a town of fishermen near Erebor, which is ruled by a greedy and tyrannical Master. Initially the dwarves and Bilbo try, with the help of Bard the Bowman, to enter the town undetected, but they get caught when trying to seize arms from the city's armoury. They are led to the Master and get released only when promising a rich reward from the treasure if they succeed to reclaim Erebor.

After a long and arduous trek and almost failing to open the secret door, they enter and Bilbo goes to the treasure room, tasked with finding the Arkenstone. Yet, Smaug the dragon wakes up and detects the company's presence. After a series of attempts to eliminate the dragon, which are not fruitful, Smaug deduces that they have been assisted by the people of Laketown. Smaug heads for the town in order to destroy it, angrily claiming, "I am fire, I am... Death," just before the credits roll.
8. Bard the Bowman slays the dragon Smaug

The death of Smaug happens within the first ten minutes of the third film, entitled "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies".

Having left Smaug hovering above Laketown, angry and murderous, we now see him unleashing fiery horror into the city. The terrified residents start fleeing, with the cowardly Master attempting to take all the treasures in his escape, assisted by a foolish steward named Alfrid, ultimately perishing in the process.

Yet, Bard the Bowman, of old noble stock, who had helped the Dwarves in the previous film to get into Laketown unobserved, climbs the belltower and shoots a black arrow in the dragon's sole unprotected spot. Smaug is killed, but Laketown is destroyed, leaving hundreds of people homeless, exposed to the elements and starving.
9. King Thorin Oakenshield dies

The death of Thorin Oakeshield happens in the last half hour of the movie, being its most climactic movement.

After the death of Smaug, the Dwarves, the remaining Men of Laketown and the Elves under King Thranduil are on the verge of war, the acute issue being the distribution of the huge treasure. Yet, they are forced by the circumstances to make peace among themselves, because two vast Orcish hosts are attacking Erebor. In the process, Thorin finally kills the enemy commander, his old foe Azog, but gets mortally wounded and dies shortly afterwards, as the Eagles and the skinchanger Beorn deliver the crushing blows to the Orc hordes.
10. Bilbo Baggins gets his spoons back from Lobelia Sackville-Baggins

This happens in the final minutes of the movie, shortly before the end.

After paying his last respects to the deceased King Thorin, Bilbo Baggins returns to his home, his mission fulfilled. Approaching, he notices that his possessions are being auctioned off and that his fellow Hobbits think he is dead. Among the willing Hobbits to share Bilbo's belongings among themselves is his relative, Lobelia. Retrieving his spoons from her, he subsequently produces a document confirming his identity. It is significant that the document in question is the contract he had signed for offering his services to Thorin, to whom he refers as a "friend" when asked who Thorin was.
